There are a few more V-ray bench results in now. The median seems to be about 26 seconds. So while a lot faster than the 45 seconds of the 1950X, it’s still not twice as fast. Not far off though.
Considering it’s only 5 seconds slower than a lot of these 128+ core Xeons and Epycs, it’s pretty impressive.
This is to be expected. The clock speed of 1950X with all 16 cores working is 3.40-3.50 Ghz however, the clock speed of 2990WX with all 32 cores working is only 3.00 Ghz or ~15% lower than 1950X. Nothing that 15-20% overclock wouldn’t “fix”. Because of the power draw and heat, it’s a lot harder to keep high all-core frequencies on a high core count CPUs than let’s say 8-12 core CPUs. I’m actually very impressed that AMD managed to even do 3.00 Ghz all-core clock on a 32-core CPU considering that the best and the highest core count Xeon (8176 Platinum) is 28 cores and has an all-core clock of only 2.10 Ghz.
NO they are all running at stock speeds, also the 1920X and 1950X have NZXT X62 AIO coolers and the 2990WX is air coold with a Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 cooler. I also do have the memory in each bumped up to 3000 to 3200.
Lastly because of NDA’s I cant share or even show the file rendered above but here are a couple specs from it:
About 1.38GB in file size
Objects: 7016
Cameras:6
Helpers: 145
Spacewarps:2
Polys: 7,197,086
I am considering buying 2990WX and use it as a server machine for Distributed Rendering.
However my workstation is i-9 7980XE. So my question is: did anyone notice any issues while rendering with DR: intel workstation (e.g. i9-7900 series) and AMD Ryzen server (e.g. 2990WX)?
I was running 64gb but dropped it down to 64 when I got the new CPU. I was rarely using more than 32gb and even at that while monitoring the usage when I could I averaged about 15gb to 22gb at any given time and my scenes are fairly heavy at 1.2gb to the latest at 4+gb for the max scene.
Hi, may I ask you what exact RAM type you are using in your Threadripper 2990WX Machine? Is it the Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200 MHz or an even faster one?
Thanks, Thomas
Hi Thomas, I was using the Corsair Vengeance RGB 3000mhz and was running it stable just over the 3000 mark but wanted a bit extra speed and switched it out for the G.Skill Trident Z 3866 running nicely at 3200. ( got the G.Skill for next to nothing from a buddy and I know I wont hit the 3866 but it runs great at 3200 and not interested in pushing it further and my ADHD doesn’t have the patients right now either lol)
We use a mix of Intel and AMD on the farm for years. No problems.
We are about to build some of these machines. The RAM question is the biggest here too. I’m surprised you don’t need more ram for more cores? 64gb is overkill?
Get yourself at least 1 X 2080Ti instead of that low end card? (then you have room to later get another one with and nvlink switch (although you may need a stronger PSU then also)
I am testing my 2990wx rig for last days now. And here’s few thoughts when I saw your spec’s:
- I would definitely go for 4 sticks of RAM. I tested my rig with 2 sticks (2x16GB) and the score on Cinebench R15 was arround 3000 pt. Then I added 2 more sticks (so 4 in total: 4 x 16GB) and the score was arround 5000 pt.
- if you want to buy a MSI MOBO I would go for MEG Creation. It keeps really low VRM temperatures. It is the one that I have.
- memory speed matters. I would go for the RAM that is at least 2933 Mgz
- if you are investing in such a monster then I recommend NVMe over “traditional” SSD. I got myself Samsung 970 EVO.
It’s just a render box no need for graphics card, i just need it to boot-up.
Also probably not much need for a proper m.2 drive once it is loaded it is all in memory.
Going to be getting many of these so need to keep the budget in check.
Thanks for the advise!
