AMD TR 7980X anyone?

Hello,

please does anybody have CPU AMD TR 7980X please?

I have a problem with utility HWMonitor. Newest version of HWM start, loading screen ok, main window shows up and immediatelly disappear for no reason. Dont know why. Can someone confirm that or give me some tip where can be a problem?
Thank you.

I can’t help with your problem (yet:) but am about to order one. I’m curious about your setup, especially power supply and what cooling you use for both CPU and GPU to keep things quiet. Was thinking about Gigabyte board with Gigabyte RTX4090 Waterforce, Enermax Liqtech TR4 2 360 (should keep temps around 75) and 1000 or 1200W power !?!?!?
Is it wise to use this system for both 3dsMax/VRay (CPU) on one side and Vantage/D5 Render on the other side? Or use a second system with faster single core speed (liek 7950X) and 2 RTX4090’s and put a Quadro in the Max-machine?

(Sorry for hijack)

So I find out that in HWM change log is no information about new TR 7000 series so they probably still doesnt support it.

Hey @trick , no problem.

I want to use CPU and GPU too. I will put my 4090 when I have computer home which will be this week I think.
I order power supply Fortron HYDRO PTM PRO 1200 ATX3.0. 1200W just to be sure it will be ok. I will have only one 4090 so its enough. When you want to have two cards I think you will need 1600W at minimum.
And about cooling I have Corsair iCUE H150i RGB Elite 360mm. Temperatures looks already superb, but again I will do more tests when I have it home.
BUT I think more important thing is case. I ordered Fractal Design Define 7 XL Black Solid which looks fantastic and everything is so quiet, really great. I dont had 4090 in it when I saw it so it will be probably little bit louder, but this case is super so I think with this case it will be still great, I will let you know.

Jiri,

Looking forward to your final findings. My provider is currently testing the dual chamber Corsair 6500X cases. I am not quite convinced because of the large footprint, so it will depend on how much they deliver! Otherwise I would prefer the Fractal case too. I would also like to know if anything “suffers” from the relatively low single core speed. May I ask what 4090 you use? When using GPU rendering does it “sing”, like reving the vents up and down (which I really hate;))?

Hi @trick

so I will know more after I have time to put all disks and 4090 to the case, but it will take some more days because I dont have time now. But CPU have around 40 °C in idle and reach 80 °C after half an hour of rendering. After that it looks like it will settle down around 77-80 °C. I have to say that is great cause I saw some reviews where they have it still around 85, so I am pretty happy with that. I only add that maximum for this CPU is 95 °C.
About graphics card, I have MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming X Trio 24G. I was little bit aware about MSI (I had always EVGA) but I saw some review about Gigabyte where some weird noises happen (like you said) so I go rather to MSI. And I have to say it is great, pretty quite, no weird noises.
One thing - I was little bit surprised about motherboard I have - asus pro ws trx50-sage wifi. BIOS is standard old BIOS, no UEFI. Dont know why or something but probably doesnt matter. Motherboard itself looks great and again no weird noises from electronic capacitors so far. Will see after graphics card and all disks but I probably doesnt buy anything else anyway.

If you have any questions, ask. I will do more tests when the computer will be ready with everything. But as I said, it will take week or two probably.

@trick

I forgot one thing. 7980X has single core boost at 5.1 which I think is pretty good frequency. But I saw in test that it raise to 5.3GHz so I think it is even better and great result. Over 5GHz I woud not say it is low frequency.

Jiri,

Thanks for your preliminary thoughts.
About single core performance: I heard from users that some Photoshop tasks were disappointing. But these are real PS (and video) pro’s which use Apple M3’s and some Intel 14900K’s. So I think it won’t make such a difference for 3D pro’s working in Windows.
Indeed the Gigabyte Waterforce cards sometimes have a high pitch noise which is more annoying than events reving up and down, but my tech guy never noticed it himself.

Hope to see your work experience before I will do my final purchase…probably in 2-3 weeks.

@trick

Hi man, so I moved everythoing completely to a new case. I have 7980X with RTX 4090. No problem at all with temperatures. Everything works smootly and really fast.
If you have some question, let me know.

Of course I did some test - VRay 6 bench, Cinebench 2024. And now I did a few tests in real situation - 3ds max with vray in my scenes. And render speed copy the results from benchmarks so it is great!

So I have a problem with new Pc, I will make a new thread.

Hi! How is your computer running? I’m thinking about doing a very similar build.

I have a problem with something, my HDD works weird so we are looking into it. It is Win 11 or something. But there is a vacation so I need couple of weeks to figure this out. Otherwise speed is phenomenal.

Waiting on my 7995WX I finally ordered.

Any special Win 11 (yuck) settings we should be looking at right away? Or was it just plug and play?

I had problems in Win 11 with disks speed after some time of working. So now I will be testing Win 10 if there will be everything ok.

In Win 10 everything is fine. CPU working without any problem and it is unbelievable fast! Really fantastic workstation!!

The 7995wx is incredible. Ridiculously fast and responsive at everything, and a beast at rendering.

With Win11 file copies get slow randomly. All other disk access is fine. Only copying files in Explorer is slow (whether from network or locally on the same NVME, or between two NVMEs), and TerraCopy doesn’t help. Is that the issue you had? I think it must have to do with scheduling, but I am not sure.

Given Win10 support ends next year I don’t really want to set up a new machine with it.

Probably yes. Win 10 is ok. I think they will fix it before win 10 end.
7995wx is good too, but it is not too much faster over 7980x and it is much more expensive. This is why I go for 7980x. Responsivnes, IPR, everything is just fantastic.
Now i am working without denoiser
