Anamorphic option in Vray framebuffer

Something i’ve always missed in the Max VFB - an option to get a nonsquare pixel representation of the rendering.

Would be good when rendering out to widescreen DVD, if you could choose, say 1.422 pixelaspect for the Vray frame buffer.

Just an idea… can’t be that difficult to implement… can it?

Im still in need for that! When will be able to view anamorphic renders on vray framebuffer correctly? Thats a must! I can not render properly if I am not able to see the picture not pixel aspect corrected. That’s an important feature for film production…

Any workaround? Has it been implemented?

I’ve started using VirtualDub to preview my sequences - opens faster than PS or Combustion… but still would be nice if it could be done within max/vray

Yeah it would be, and combustion lets u preview it with a somewhat low quality mode, u can see some jagged edges…i dont know if its related to combustion or that’s the loss of quality u should expect from working in anamorphic.

combustion sucks if one uses the “use pixel aspect” feature.
On the other hand, working on monitors with a square pixel, it’s hard to represent a 0.9 px aspect, or a 1.2 :slight_smile:
I find it easier to leave Px aspect to 1 and stretch the size of the image to compensate, as long as i stay on the pc.
I convert the video only just before the output, generally (for instance, Pal 16:9 to me is a 1024x576 square px).

The thing is I usually output combustion to an external 4:3 tv monitor, but combustion has no option to tell the tv: hey this is 16:9! Therefore i see it correctly on pc monitor and incorrectly on tv monitor, what is weird :lol:

On top of that, you cannot lock the output of a single viewport in combustion, and it sucks big time, because it would be cool to see the final output on tv monitor no matter what; instead of that, the output changes as u start working on a operator viewport, e.g. a mask operator.

what do u use as framebuffer?
A digisuite, or a 10bit sdi card?

I can’t render anamorphic pixel aspects with DR? It is not possible?

Well now with vray 1.5 we can select the pixel aspect ratio of the rendering image, but there’s no way to see it aspect ratio corrected (not stretched), which is very unconvenient, especially when dealing with clients. Is there any way to display the image correctly inside vray frame buffer?
I am talking about 720X576 (PAL) 16:9 with an aspect ratio of 1.778. Waiting til postproduction to see the image how it should be seems too much for me! :frowning:

Well, I hate to repeat myself, but since i didnt find any response to the Anamorphic question itself, i must ask again!

What we need exactly is the ability to “stretch” the image to match the pixel aspect ratio, as we can do in photoshop or any post app.
I enclose an example:

Vray frame buffer should stretch the image to match the pixel aspect ratio, but without modifying the image itself, it´s just a previsualization setting.

Is it impossible to implement due the inner nature of Vray frame buffer?

It can certainly be done, and I’ll make a note of it, but it won’t be soon (it might break other things, and getting a stable build is our goal at the moment).
