And so it begins........

The race for the new breed Rendering in Maya:

they could really use better renderings. they should hire some artists, man.

rom

their sponza rendering is too washed out, no contrast

who comes up with names for these things? turtle?!

i remember seeing the first vray renderings when it was announced and being totally unimpressed.

well i must say … old technology …unless its the peps doing the renders ???
everything looks to hard …shadows, saturation ect …room for a lot of improvement.

Natty

The real factor is this… they are the first to have it in Maya… or at least announce that they do, and they are will be showing it at Siggraph which will guive them a HUGE exposure.

As far as quality of render. I think it is just fine for a rendering engine that has not even really been tested by artist.

If you judge a rendering engine by the gallery, you are judging it for the wrong reason. Rendering engines don’t have a “make me a artist” button. You have to do that on your own.

showing at siggraph means very little

unless the big boys are using your software to show off their hardware, or unless people actually stop at your teeny booth in the back corner of the exhibit hall, its not gonna stick in anyone’s mind

It already made it to this forum, so I think it will stick to many peoples memory. Rumors spread fast on the internet!

I agree that we can’t really comment on this program, as there are only a few renders available, without any info. So let’s just wait a bit before trashing this turtle.

Maybe it is as slow as that?

I always know that Maya Artist can’t use render…

I do not care at all, it think the surprising thing on siggraph will be a Vray Standalone Version. But as far as I was speaking with people they think MentalRay is still the best render of it all. Well, let them think what they want to, Vray is best. But it should be improved, so where is 1.1 ?

robert

Man… you seem very bias. I love Vray, I think most people know I do. I talk about how cool it is. But there are so many amazing rendering engines out there. I have been using Renderman for a while now, and even though it seems so primitive in some ways, it can produce some of the best results I have ever seen… This is without raytracing, without, GI, without raytrace lighting or anything. Just pure shading.

Mentalray as well. It is also very well proven in production. I can handle most anything and there are millions of shaders written for it. Renderings like those done for Fight Club, The Cell, Panic Room, Star Wars… I mean come on! How can you make such a crazy statement that Vray is better then MentalRay? Work on a couple of movies with them, and then make a statement like that. They are both good in their own way.

I would love to see Vray being pushed into film more. The guys at Digital Dimension are having some good results. But there needs to be a lot more of that for it to work for most. Vray is slowly getting its maturity, but it still has a ways to go.

Yeah, I think that at this forum have recently been many more negative reactions towards renderers other than VRay. It wasn’t like that in the past. The open feeling of this forum is starting to turn into something very different, something like “look at those mistaken who are not smart enough to see that our VRay is the best of all”. I don’t think that this is a professional approach.

I agree with you Dusan, there have been lots of childish threads started lately. I hope we won’t have any more of them, or this forum would deteriorate into uselessness. All the threads are accomplishing is giving VRay users a bad reputation.

STOP IT!!

i agree

Ive been around since the beta testing days - when we only had the delphi forum and not many users. This was not the way it was done.

‘to the vray fan club’

Vray’s popularity has spawned a new generation of 3d wannabes who think the software makes the artist. Sorry guys it all comes down to the artist - ive seen guys who create amazing images with just the scanline renderer.

put aside the new generation renderers and go back to scanline - test your skills - then you will come back with a deeper understanding.

Let’s not go from bashing renderers to bashing humans. Seems like a step backwards.

marklazaro …oh yes, good old bounce lights. it was SO MUCH fun to create 100 bounce lights in my arch. renderings. i really loved it. and now i go down to my car, throw out the engine and walk in my car like the flintstones. hey man ! this is called progress !! i´m an architect and i don´t gouge my drawings into stone because of that progress and i´m happy about it. vray is just another tool, but you have to learn your craft first.

i think what he is trying to say more is that…and to use some of your examples… it would be better for some people to play with crayons before they start using pens and technical drawing tools. Having the most advanced tools is no excuse for not knowing the basics. When you created 100 lights to simulate bounced light it more or less gave you a better insight into how a global illumination engine is trying to simulate bounced light.
So i agree. learn the basics…learn the principles…then tackle the more advanced options. Too many 3d newbies are picking up GI packages thinking it will improve their work. When in reality i usually notice its the modeling skills or the material skills that is offsetting the images. It would pain me to see a porsche used by an old granny just to drive to the market to pick up some food. And it pains me just as much to see the teapot on a plane rendered in GI by a newbie saying “look, i can do realistic images”. Using a powerfull engine in a pointless task is a waste

thanks Da_elf, you nailed it. BACK TO BASICS - learn to walk before you run . . . . thats what I meant

I also added " - then you will come back with a deeper understanding. "

haha, this is the best “digital” rip and conversion of Schopenhauers Rule §32 how to win in a disscussion:

“if you don’t have any more rational arguments or you start loosing the control over the discussion, start attacking the other side with personal, human insults…” (free translation)

 I think you hit the point of the most of all such Render-Threads… :o
