cool… is the scene just lit with those 2 objects ?

Yup!

Cheerio,

nice one…

mind showing us the material for the glowing lightening strikes?

i find it difficult to get glowing things to cast light how i want them to.
at the moment i’m using a standard mat with a vraywrapper to up the light output.

is this the right way to do things?

It’s one method indeed. I tend to go for the even simpler approach: simply setting the Send GI multiplier of a self-illuminated object in the Object Settings of the render dialog’s System rollout.

Important tips for using self-illuminated objects as light sources:

 Don’t make the object send out a GI value that’s too high or you’ll get what I call “DISCOOO!”

 Turn up the amount of hemispheric subdivisions or there will not be enough sampling of light rays, resulting in rough spots and similar trashed parts of your image.

 Set the max. irradiance map rate to 0 or your light and shadow detail will suffer.

Subtle glow is simply some post-processing in Photoshop.

cheers dude, i’ll give it a go!

You’re welcome. I edited my post with the tips in the mean time, to add one more tip.

Your work is always great man. Love seeing your stuff!!!

i want such a thing in my living room.

add some cartoony character sitting on the benches would be nice.
like sitting around a fire, roasting marsh mellows in the glow.

looks fun!! egz mats have worked fine for me, egz light works fine, you should try that one too!

unfortunately i’m using viz4, so no egz light…
makes it crash.

Hi,
It really looks nice! lovely

and I agree with you with the DISCOO thing !

Thanks for all the nice comments guys! Much appreciated.

Of course the scene wasn’t possible to realize without our lightning-fast VRay.

Great render. Got me playing around trying to make a neon effect. In Max 6 I had some decent success making glows using a blend made up of of the standard materal (for self illuminance) and the arcitectural material (for the glow). GI has to be on of course and affects the whole blend, so tweaking everything may be required to get the right effect.

Looks very nice. The image has got a nice Eighties feel to it, because of the pink neon color and the slick airbrush-like perfection.

Metin

I really like both your guy’s work…refreshing
