Atmospheric support for the Vray physical camera

I might be a complete idiot, but I can’t get atmospherics like fog to work when rendering with the vray physical camera. The camera doesn’t even have the atmos.ranges stuff the standard cameras have.

On another note, maybe even write a vray fog thingy that just has a colour and density variable, and takes scene scale into account, and racts to lightsources as well? Part of the vray sky system maybe?

Hoping for too much here maybe?
I’d be happy if I could just have max’s fog with the phys. camera for now

Second that one

Be extra nice if it was tied to the Sky system too.

I suppose the atmosphere may be there, but just too weak for you to see (similar to how regular backgrounds turn dark when you use the physical camera).

Best regards,
Vlado

shame on you guys

yikes im confused. links pointing to links pointing to links. Let’s just start a new one. Atmospherics please!

Ah well…in the back of my mind I thought I had posted something on this topic, but I was in a hurry, so couldn’t be arsed to do a search.
(Lazy bastard, I know).

As for vlado’s answer, even if the fog ammount is set to 100% on both sliders, there is no fog in the rendering.
Would you mind showing me how to render max fog with the physical camera? A small test scene posted here or something?

Would really appreciate it.

Thought I’d ask again about the fog issue. I’m in dire need to render the fog in camera. I’d hate to have to set up a separate pass for this.
No way for you (vlado) to “enable” this in the next Rc build?

i would just do it as a seperate pass, render a z depth pass and add the fog in your comp. You get far more control over it

I might want to specify that I am using the curved lens, the spinner on the vray camera. How would you render this in a separate pass if this camera doesn’t support fog? I can’t use a standard max camera as it will not match the original footage.
Only way I can think of is using the falloff map and set it to distance mode and fiddling about with that… or using zdepth.
Zdepth doesn’t really work though when using motion blur, so I can’t really use that
Is it really too much to ask for atmospherics support for the vray camera?
Is the issue the whole exposure thing, not being able to calculate the right light value for the fog when using say the sun & sky system?

turn off the exposure control on the camera and then you can render a z-depth pass for comping

Not to be rude or anything, but you seem to be misunderstanding. Zdepth is useless as this is for an animated commercial that is going to use motion blur. In addition, I am using the sun and sky system. I know I don’t have to use this, and can fake it otherwise, but surely since this is the wishlist section, and not the general section, wishing for a vray camera that can do what it is meant to do for animations, and not just stills, is legitimate?
As i posted above. I know of ways to circumvent this, but I would rather this was possible right off the bat.

Trixian - any luck with this effect? I’m working on something similar and have noticed that when I add volumetric fog into my scene it renders black even though the fog color is white. I’m also using a vrayphysicalcam. I really don’t want to have to render out a separate pass.

You need to boost the fog color way beyond white to make it visible. You can probably use the VRayColor texture for this.

Best regards,
Vlado

How do I go about doing that? I don’t see any options of using a VRayColor texture in the Volume Fog rollout.

Are you referring to the standard “fog” atmosphere effect? That I see you can assign a map to, but not volumetric fog.

Righty…then I guess you mean adding the VRayColor map to the “Environment Color Map” Slot in the Fog Parameters roll out?
When you say beyond white, how does that translate when using a blueish tinted atmosphere for haze?

Would be best to show an example, I suppose… like so:

A full-res version:

Play with the VRayColor, the fog density and layer levels to get the desired result.

Best regards,
Vlado

Thanks for the help! I figured out that I needed to use the basic Fog effect rather than the Volume Fog since that one doesn’t have the option of using a map for the color. I was also able to put some noise in the opacity slot so I could break up the fog. Works great.

works well, thanks vlado.

Great. thanks a lot Vlado. Now i have to change all my cameras back to VrayCams again in this project (just love using that curved lens)

On another note, does anybody have any advice when fogging opacity mapped panes?
Checking exponential in the atmospherics window doesn’t help, as it still shows up against the empty bg (sky).
These planes are using standard materials and are 100% self illuminating. (Don’t ask why).
Would this work better with some other vray type shader?

For now I seem to be able to render out a separate alpha from the vray frame buffer, that doesn’t have the planes alpha affected by the fog, but for future reference, if you, Vlado were so inclined as to write up a proper nice and fancy vray fog or something (like requested earlier)…maybe take opacity mapped planes into consideration?
