Banding - how to get rid of...

How do I get rid of the banding in the image below??? It is specially visible in the darker areas of the image - I have tried numerous settings for antialiasing, lights and QMC.

Image below is a region from a 3500px rendering (note theres a gap between ceiling and wall). I am using a simple setup with Vray lights in window openings (glass hidden)

Vray 1.46.10 and Max6.

Current settings:
AA: Adaptive subdiv 0/2 (also tried Adaptive QMC for AA)
GI: 1st - Irrmap / 2nd Lightmap
IRRmap: Medium / Hsph=50/Interp.=40 (tried higher as well)
Lightmap: Subdivs=2000 / pre-filter=20 / Sample size=0.005 / Interp.samples=20
QMC sampler: Adap.am=0.85 / Noise.thres=0.005 / Min Samples=16 / Global subdivs=16

ok. im lost. i dont see any banding. must be my monitor or something

does this help?

and YES my monitor is in 32bit mode…

… hopefully the client cant see it either

i just looked at it on 5 different monitors and didnt see it. my monitors could be crappy though.

Thanks Da Elf… just did the same here… found a couple of monitors - same make, model and contrast/brightness settings - where it didnt show up…

Crazy :?

Im going to leave it… unless others have tried something similar

I can´t see any bending !
It must be your monitor gamma/brightness !

there isnt any banding as far as i can see .. zoomed right in and nothing.

time to get a new monitor!

same here…no banding to see!!!

hehe. must suffer from an over active immagination hehe kidding  glad to hear your not having problems with vray. nice lighting. sorry to hear about your monitor. hope it led a full and productive life. give it a good burrial (dont forget the flowers)

Even if you take it into Photoshop and adjust the levels there’s no banding.

Well I can see really heavy banding, it looks dreadful. If I were your client I would be VERY upset, in fact, I would take it that you were trying to insult me personally.

Sorry, just looked again and there’s no banding on my (CRT) monitor.

No banding - must be a monitor issue. Many LCDs dont have the same color depth as CRTs. Or it could just be a crappy video card.

not only is there no banding, this must be one of the best image Ive ever seen… The simplicity… the depth… I can just keep staring at it and see new things all the time…

oh wait I just looked at it from another monitor… I dont like it anymore.. hehe j/k

I see the banding, on a couple year old Viewsonic P225f

I see the banding on my SGI LCD monitor  (no kidding)

thats a typical lcd/tft panel problem
so far there are only a few panels on the market that are able to approximately display the same color range as (good) crt monitors

thats THE major reason why color critical work (prepress f.e.) is still done on crts

most problems occurr when you have gradients of similar color and luminance (f.e. the default title bars of windows going from medium dark blue to medium light blue)

you can simulate the gradient in photoshop to see if vray is the reason
just sample the two extreme colors and create a gradient over a similar width my guess is you will have similar banding

cya,

Mike
ps: the only method i know how to get rid of banding is reducing the number of colors and dithering the image to simulate the lost values - probably not what you want
other than that - try to show the project on other monitors

I changed my monitor to 16bit and i can see banding that would seem to line up to youre arrows.

Are you 100% sure that its not a 16/32bit colour issue?

Lots of LCDs are only capable of 18 bit color (262144 colors) and would show banding in images like this. Even if the display properties are set to 24bit.

This is exactly the same problem i had when switching from the 1.09x builds to the betas. I kept on sendig vlado renders of this one scene where the banding was really bad in a softly lit gray area, thinking it might be an authorization issue. He politely repplied that there was no banding.
That’s when I discovered that the old crt im using here, can’t actually display the full colour range. Time to get a new monitor
