Better video controls

I find the video editing controls to be super clunky and frustrating. When trying to create a curved path for the animation is impossible to get the camera to stay level or make a smooth arch. It would be nice to have more control in the path creation. I’m open to suggestions in the interim.

Yeah, video editing is rather unintuitive in general. I’m missing quite a bunch of things there:

  • Where’s the play, play backwards, pause, rewind and skip button?
  • Where’s the active timeline that I can skip foward/backward on/scroll through during preview playback?
  • Why can’t I drag keyframes on that timeline back and forth to adjust the timing/order instead of opening them, turning the timing wheel and check again if it worked?
  • Where’s the little preview thumbail when hovering over a keyframe on the timeline?
  • Why can’t I move cameras around by dragging and dropping them from outside?

There’s always room for improvement, I guess.

I agree, the editing is not very intuitive, but to answer your questions…

Where’s the play, play backwards, pause, rewind and skip button?

Where’s the active timeline that I can skip foward/backward on/scroll through during preview playback?
After creating a path, you need to be in the “Keyframe Editor” mode (double click on a keyframe arrow from the ‘video editor’ or click on a camera in the main view). After this you can flick through the keyframes from the [<] and [>] buttons on the editor’s title bar. Hitting [p] on the keyboard previews from he current keyframe forward.

Why can’t I drag keyframes on that timeline back and forth to adjust the timing/order instead of opening them, turning the timing wheel and check again if it worked?
You can’t change the order, but in the keyframe editor you can slide the ‘time stamp’ between the previous and next keyframes (It would be nice to adjust them from the video editor rather than the keyframe editor.)

Where’s the little preview thumbail when hovering over a keyframe on the timeline?

If keyframes and scenes were interchangeable then you would have thumbnails. </broken record>

Why can’t I move cameras around by dragging and dropping them from outside?

Personally I wouldn’t want to: I find it quite intuative to “be” the camera and move it to see what I want. If a path clips a wall I can simply move a camera slightly or insert another keyframe and move it. I prefer to be able to click on a camera and that’s me seeing what it sees.Perhaps you could move them if you were not in video editing mode? (option to toggle the visibility of the cameras and path from the options menu - like the sound icons)

But after a path is created it would be great to see the path from above and drag time markers on the path to retime or remodel the path.

You can - you just go to the video editing mode and navigate around your model (or hit [num pad 5] ), then double-click on the camera you want to move and move it.

This shows you what the end video would look like - you don’t take a photo by positioning a tripod and not looking through the lens.

Thanks for your answer. I know all of that, my questions were of a more rhetorical type, maybe should’ve clarified. :S
