Bitmap Quality

Since MAX 2017 I can’t display bitmaps in High Quality, which makes modeling from a blue print impossible. 1 1/2 years later there has to a solution. Has anybody found a fix? I know this is a hobbies software (sarcassm), but it should be able to display images in high quality.

Try this:
Alt +B and increase the maximum resolution for Bitmaps under “Display Performance” to something like 4K for example .

Yeah, I tried that, but no. I just get the checkboard pattern.

Strange, I don’t have this issue in 2017, I just checked. Maybe you get low on VRAM so you just see checkers? Run MSI Afterburner and enable the statistics. You can monitor your VRAM consumption that way. A lot of stuff running in the background can eat your VRAM quickly even if you don’t use a lot of high-res textures in Max. For example, if along Max you run a dozen of Youtube videos + Photoshop documents + After Effects projects etc. If that’s not the problem you may also check with different graphics card drivers.

No, I only run MAX 95% of the time, but I’ll check.

it shows checker-board for seconds depending on your VGA but shouldn’t stay like this .
try both shaded /realsitc mode for the maps (I don’t remember if it is still with this names tho )
check the latest driver for you video card and maybe ask the support at Autodesk if this a known bug with your hardware .

is Max definitely using your dedicated GPU and not the onboard graphic if you have it?

What what map type are you using? Bitmap, VrayHDRI, VrayBmpfilter ?

How do I see what MAX is using? Mostly I am using VrayHDRI in my shaders.

i usually increase this value, turn the map on and off and it works perfectly

Dont mess with your max settings.
Only thing you need to do for BLUEPRINTS in viewport, is to use VrayBmpfilter instead of the VRayHDRI. Your blueprints will now be clear as day in viewport

I’ll try that right away.

PERFECT! Now, why isn’t that documented?
