Hey guys, we’ve been pretty slack about showing the work we’ve completed since we last posted. So I’m going to aim to get more of it up here. Starting off with one of our best images (I think) from last year. This is AR Design Studio’s “Black House”, it’s won a bunch of design awards which we can’t take any credit for because the house was already built and finished before we did this image. We just wanted to wow them and show them what we could deliver for them should they be looking at CGI studios in the future.
Your mowed grass looks great. Could you share how you went about it.
Did you use 2 different clumps and apply a transform and different splines to mimic lines…
I am a landscape architect and use a regular preset of grass with this tutorial How to add football field marking to grass using Forest Pack
We use a Gradient Map piped into a Forest Color’s Color Tint Map and so the stripes you see are actually mostly the reflective color of the grass being turn on or almost off. We also overlay it on the diffuse maps to add a bit more strength. Hopefully the attached picture makes sense.

Thanks so if I understand this color tint applies the gradient to the overall grass material.
Is it a simple gradient?
Could you explain how the width of the strips is determined.
If you could share the forest color map it would be great, if it is not too much trouble.

Lastly the 2 corona color maps one into the gradient, the other in the forest color tint, is there anything special about them.

They just control the strength of the stripe reflection. If you made the gradient perfectly black and white the stripes would be really strong, so we made it grey/white.
IF you want to get really accurate with your mowed grass instead of turning the reflection of the grass on or off for the stripes. Instead you should change the orientation of the grass blades bending with each stripe, all using the same material. The mowed grass look is from the mower pushing down the grass in one direction then coming back in the other direction.
