Wondering what everyone uses for there bloom and glare effects…ie vray,ps or a comp program like nuke?
I have been trying to get the VFB in vray working with bloom and glare but I have to say I have not had any luck with it. Are there any good tutorials on the setup?
For interiors it works great, however I struggle with exterior. I did a cabin interior using it and it was awesome. I have also used Looks, which works in 32bit, was as also great.
I am trying to use the vfb as well. I guess I just dont understand what or how to use the mask. Is the mask object specific? or do I need to setup a pass for it?
yeah - what we’ve been doing is loading the specular, reflection and base exr’s into AE and exporting a few different flare setups/options over black back into the render folder for laying over in fusion.
We’ve been doing a sun flare from the base, a specular track, and small glints from the reflection. It tracks color, size & position from the base frame automatically so now we just copy and paste the same effects onto the appropriate frames for each shot, alter the brightness if it needs it and press export. Helps keep them consistent, there are 40 odd shots.
Depends how you do your stills. We usually shrink down images of lens flares and manually copy anywhere from a hundred to a thousand around our still images.
ah neil i was about to ask how you used optical flares given that you guys use fusion…
we are have tried sapphire but prefer the look of the presets in optical flares
iv been using the VFB for interiors for glare fx, works ok. also tried arion fx which wasnt bad but a bit overkill.
you can save separate glare and bloom elements from VFB. its rgb plus full strengh glare/bloom so just substract rgb to have clean effect.
masking - there is ‘lens effect source’ render element that helps with masking right brightness for effects.
We did, I’ve used a few in the past (sapphire & frischluft) but on this animation we’ve got 40 odd shots to complete so it’s best if the whole team has a copy of fusion - meaning instead of our 2 paid floating licenses for 6, we’ve gone over to the free version of 7 to do the bulk of the work. The free version doesn’t support plugins, so we’re looking at an extra $1k each for anything that works as a plugin straight in fusion.
There’s also the simple fact that this looks better than any other flare plugin i’ve used - it’s incredibly easy to make super beautiful custom flares, there’s a richness and detail to them which i’ve never seen before. I would still be using this with the extra steps over any other option i’ve seen in the past, even if cost didn’t come into it at all.
