BR-52 Steam locomotive

Hi, today I’m presenting a personal project. I had a lot of fun making it. I could say it’s a small way back to my childhood memories, when steam locomotives were still in use.

The technical aspects of the project were quite challenging and time-consuming, especially the locomotive and the tender unwrapping, which took me about 5 days.

I did not want to take any shortcuts, so no cheating using AI enhancers, no matte painting, only 3d stuff ( except cutout people of course ).
The locomotive and the tender have been split into 6 UDIM tiles for best texture quality. Texturing done in Adobe 3D Painter, 6 textures at 8K each.
Fumes and steam simulated in Embergen, rendered as VDB in 3ds Max + V-Ray.
Postproduction done in Affinity.

I hope you find it interesting.
Kind regards
Bartek

Beautiful work! I love trains. You nailed it.

Amazing work Bartek - congrats!

Thanks guys! I was pushing really hard on this one. No shortcuts whatsoever. I’m glad you like it

Amazing!!

Second and fifth image really great.
Just one thing about the fifth: could be more dramatic adding rain or, opposite, a sunny lighting, like the second one.

But just personal taste…so technically speaking I think it’s really great.

Thanks! I did such a tryout, but didn’t work well, so I sticked to the overcast mood  Eventually I found overcast scenario more…emotional

looks great! One thing that I notice, in the last few images somehow the scale of the smoke seems off. it seems like it has too many small details. At least, in my mind. haven’t compared it to photographs.

Thanks for the feedback! Depending on references, the smoke varied from small detailed to rather large clumps. Now when you pointed that out, I could agree that less detailed smoke could have worked better for those images.

very nice!!! great work!

Thanks @haniel1107

Really impressive work, Fantastic attention to detail overall

Thanks! Tried to do my best
