I have been making some animations and then turning them in .mpgs and noticed windows media player plays the animations darker than quicktime. (powerdvd also plays the files correctly)
I have been using tmpge to convert an avi to an .mpg. with tmpge I can control the colour balance but what I would like is windows media to play the animation correctly.. ,
Is there a solution to this problem?
other than not using windows media player.
i personally like to use media player classic for all file formats
even .mov?
but do you a solution to the fact that windows media buggers up the the brightness?
I think it applies some sort of gamma correction. There may be an option, either in the player or in your graphics card settings, to control this.

val. yup. even my *.mov files i watch in media player classic. heck even DVDs. windows media layer sucks bigtime hehehe

I have been poking around windows media and it won’t let me change any settings.
I’ll have to look into my graphics card settings.
my hope was making it so other peoples machines would see what I want them to see.
Da_elf how do you get WMP to play **.mov files?
i’ve had same problem with it. like false white balance, all white areas turned yellow. but i’ve had same problem with media classic.
val2…not widows media player. i use media player classic. it uses alot less resources than windows media player

I’m still stuck on WMP as it doesn’t solve my problem.
Most people don’t have this and I wanted to be able to make WMP work.
funny WMP doesn’t work well with other applications. You’d imagine they would worry people might no use it and go to other software. :roll:
I think Windows media player is actually playing the files correctly (for tv use) most computer dvd players boost the gamma for viewing on computer monitors (this is an option in winDVD) white point on a TV is considerably lower than a computer monitor. White point 255 255 255 is out of gamut for broadcast spec. It also depends if you are using video overlays then this is affected I believe by the gamma colour overlay setting of your video card. I’m no expert on these topics though.

You might also want to try out quicktime alternative if MPC wont play MOVs properly.
Also the brightness issues could be related to the overlay settings of your video card. Have a trawl thru its options and see if there is something about brightness, might be called overlay or something… depends.
VLC media player is a good option too
