Bump maps rendering at large scale

I’m seeing my bump maps render at large scale even thow they look fine in the Vantage viewport. Any idea why this would be happening. I have to lower the normal and bump map slider to .5 or less to render properly. VANTAGE 3.3.0

What do you mean by “large scale” ?

You can try disabling “shading graphs for bump maps” - this will revert the bump map calculation to what it was in Vantage 3.2.x.

Like the multiplier is set to a high number. It only happens at render time. Looks correct when working in Vantage.

Do you maybe have a different quality preset when doing the final render ? One where the “bump for shading graphs” option is different ?

Here is the issue… when working with liveLink, the display looks proper, but when I render the image, I get a large bump. See attached images. Since the real-time looks good, I don’t see the scale issue until I render. So in Vantage I had to turndown the bump intensity to get what I though I was getting in the first place.

What do you call “large bump”? The blur in the right pic? Looks like DOF to me. Also try to set texture lod bias to -2

Can you send this scene to support please i.e. open a ticket ?

What do you mean by “render” here ? Is it the “render animation in vantage” button in 3dsMax or do you export a vrscene and then open it in Vantage and do a high quality render ?

Basically the livelink preview shows what I think I’m gonna get. Then when I open my vrscene and run the animation over night, look at the sequence, I noticed that the bump map was too strong. So I wasted 9hrs of rendering. I lessen the bump render a quick still to comfirm, then I have re-render the sequence with correct bump maps strength. Just wish things were wysywig between the leveling and Vantage standalone.

The only way this could happen is if you have “shading graphs for bump maps” enabled in one case and disabled in the other.

I have also been experiencing what I believe you’re talking about.

I have a project that renders fine in VRay, and in Vantage the bump maps are all extremely exaggerated - I have to adjust the global bump map multiplier to 0.1 to get it looking like it was in VRay.

Not sure why this is the default behaviour - I assumed it was something to do with how it handles Enscape materials.

If I’m not mistaken, after the implementation of procedural bump in Vantage, the intensity of pre-existing bump strengths changed by around 10x for some reason, so everything now requires readjusting. Live-Link setting vs. Render settings are different sometimes, so perhaps different calculation method is being applied.

At least, that was our experience after the update.

I’ve run into similar differences between the viewport and final render before. Since lowering the bump strength fixes the result, I’d be curious whether the shading graph change is affecting the scale or intensity during render. Disabling that option sounds worth testing.

I would like to request a scene/project file that has this Bump difference between viewport and Anim. rendering. Please upload here a test 3dsmax scene with the bump asset or if there are any confidential data - you can submit a ticket from here: pport.chaos.com/hc/en-us/requests/new and upload the files for a review.

Different results in interactive vs offline rendering are usually due to a different Quality Preset. Pay attention to the preset selected in the Render side-panel. The viewport previews the selected settings before you click Start.

Some smaller differences may be due to different denoisers (e.g. DLSS vs OIDN), but in this case the 10x bump difference is probably caused by the use of different render settings (shading graph bump ON vs OFF).

We are experiencing same issue with bump maps becoming surprisingly strong (as if intensity of it was cranked up) and its not the quality presets in viewport vs render output, before latest update we did not had such issue with the materials that we currently having.

Yes, we added support for bump mapping using shading graphs (i.e. procedural textures) in Vantage 3.3.0. However it uses a different calculation compared to the old bump which sometimes results in a very different bump amount. Your safest bet is to turn off the option until we fix it to work closer to V-Ray and to our bump with the option off.

I’ve turned mine off… seems to fix the problem.
