Can't adjust denoising value in VFB

Hello,

If I recall correctly we should be able to adjust the denoising value after the rendering. It doesn’t seem possible in 14.1.0, the denoising checkbox is ticked but greyed out:

Intel denoiser, show in Post is enabled.

If you click the blue drop down arrow, what happens? This should expose the value for editing.

It is working here (checkbox not greyed out) - can you share your settings, version of Corona and C4D, and OS and version?

But on further testing I’ve managed to break it in two ways - it being greyed out as you showed, but also with it showing as adjustable when no denoising is in use at all.

EDIT do you have more than one scene open at once in C4D?

:joy: even better so

EDIT do you have more than one scene open at once in C4D?

Yes very often, one of the really great feature of C4D

Did a really quick test in a new, empty scene and it works as expected. Even with another blank scene open in the next tab.

I guess it could be related to something like updating Corona in a middle of a project ? ( started on v13 I think )

Not sure yet  I haven’t established an exact set of steps guaranteed to make it happen, but we are looking into it! Another question that might be relevant, or might not lol - do you have different denoising settings for IR vs final renderings (e.g. None for IR, Intel for final), and were you swapping between running IR and final render when it happened? Pretty sure you would be since that’s the point of IR, but just asking!

Is the first report and screenshot in this thread about production rendering or interactive rendering?
Update: never mind, something is broken both in IR and PR. Investigating.

So it seems the Denoising checkbox in the VFB can be easily tricked into staying forever active or forever inactive. Sharing instructions below, hopefully this can serve as a workaround until the issue is fixed:

To permanently disable the Denoising checkbox:

  • Set denoising under general settings to any denoiser type
  • Go to Corona menu > Interactive rendering
  • Click the Stop button in the Corona VFB to stop rendering
  • Click Render in the Corona VFB to start rendering
  • Observe that the Denoising checkbox is now greyed out in the Post tab even though production rendering is enabled, so it is expected to be active
Note: when rendering is stopped, denoising is applied as expected, only the checkbox is inactive in the VFB UI
Optionally: switch to another scene, turn denoising on and off and observe that the checkbox is permanently deactivated and cannot be easily activated

To permanently enable the Denoising checkbox:

  • Start a new scene
  • Set denoising under general settings to any denoiser type
  • Go to Corona menu > Corona VFB
  • Click Render in the Corona VFB (pick either of the options when prompted about denoising and HQ filtering - it doesn’t matter)
  • Observe that the Denoising checkbox is now active in the Post tab
  • Disable denoising or start IR and observe that the Denoising checkbox is still active, even though it is expected to be greyed out

Thanks for reporting this!

Thanks for the feedback and the workaround maru. Fortunately the denoising still works and is applied as you saw so it’s not a big issue. I would rather prefer that you guys focus on these lags with the VFB and the node editor, it’s almost unusable sometimes. I will revert to v13.
