hi @ all i’ve problems to make this kind of carbon looking realistic(no real reference here)
i pull my hair out to find the right settings (roughness, reflection, aniso etc.)
any tips ?
thanks
I can imagine modeling this and then baking it into a normal map. I might try that later…
Hey jaja, it looks like you based your CF material on diffuse component alone, while in real world it gets its look mostly from reflection. The most important channels here would be bump (normal map) and anisotropic rotation. I had several attempts to make my CF material with mental ray as well as with Corona. I did it as maru said - modeled small weave patch, baked maps from it and then constructed material from those maps. Still didn’t achieved result that would fully satisfied me, though. Might do few more attempts.
Here’s one of my latest attempt:
That should be easily achievable with a good normal map.
My attempt. I tried to reproduce the material from 1st post, but it’s really hard - very dependent on the lighting… I am attaching the scene + textures too, so feel free to play with it. The anisotropy rotation is probably wrong - I baked black and white version, and then used output settings to alter it because I thought that black = 0 and white = 90. Well, I was wrong. ![]()
Hmm, I have tried to recreate this membrane using my previously posted materials as a basis, then tweaking it a bit more (normal size and some anisotropy). Not sure if I managed to get it to look similar (sorry for the shitty model of the membrane also, made it quickly). If I had some better quality map it would look better and sharper for sure, and it would need to get a bit more passes. My normal map is only like 1024x1024.
But yeah.. as Maru said, it is very very lightning dependant. You can create it to look similar to your reference then you rotate it around and it looks completely different ![]()
@maru..looks promising ! thanks for your help and the scene file. will try it ![]()
@tomislavn.. nice too. could i ask forthe scene file to have a look at your setup ? ![]()
update: my first try with your map maru, but i will work on it!
Hey
glad that you like it! Unfortunately, I haven’t saved the scene, but I made some screenshots when I did it in case you want the material setup.
Please, find attached the zip file with my carbon fiber normal map and some material screenshots (it is the version without glossy coating).
Looking forward to your examples ![]()
EDIT: Added screenshot of the normal map for preview. If you wanna use it download the full quality TIF on top (it’s zipped since forum doesn’t support TIF files).

@tomislavn…thank’s for your effort ![]()
