chromatic aberration with VRay

some early tests with rendered chromatic aberration effect.

ps: yes, I know it’s easier in post so no need to remind me that - but it’s still a hobby every now and then so consider it a fun project or a bit of r&d at best, thx.

very nice, how did you go about it?

I was thinking of a VRLens file, is that what you mean by “rendering through dispersive lens (2.0 in vray calendar)” ?
Or you mean literally putting a geo in front of the camera?

Looks good! One of our interns also did an experiment with raytracing a real camera system; some results are below. We still haven’t decided if we want to put this into V-Ray officially or just dump it on Github.

Best regards,
Vlado

I vote for inclusion. ^^

Geometry in front of vray camera - I thought VRLens file would produce just distortion and not color aberration. but because of rendertimes I simplified it to rendering through single plane (one poligon) but than I encountered a bug in RT (contacted support about that, reference number is 114-046-024 i guess, all the details are there).
so my current “lens” only works in Adv right now.

nice experiments, ones with aspheric elements are the best. I stopped at one lens hence problem with dof - everything at least a bit off focus. and kudos to the intern.

how would that look implemented into VRay? helper like stereo rig? connected to modeled lens system??

and I still need to do comparison with some post tools for chromatic aberration to look for advantages of doing it in render (besides it being a cool trick)

This

had this come to mind instantly.

+1 on that Lele

Would be cool if we could get a lens effect for CA.

Me too! It’s interesting to see

Any news on this ? Would be great to see this included in Vray

With the suggestions here, several years ago about getting a DSL and playing around, I found how much money you have to spend to get a lens that doesn’t have these issues. I stopped using chromatic aberration a year ago and I don’t think I have missed it.

Different strokes! For nearly every vfx shot I do there’s some lens vignette, warp and chroma added to all our cg renders to mimic the properties of the lens that shot it - the imperfections are a big part of what makes our stuff feel real!

I do the vignette… I might put other things back in

so that old thing got dug out. I now realised - forgot to post the shader I was using: single plane in front of camera, additive vray blend mtl with 3 refractive lyers (refraction colour red/blue/green, cyan/yellow/magenta or whatever else fitting a+b+c=1.0) and ior of 0.097, 1.000 and 1.003 (or similar to control the strength of aberration.

How are you guys adding it in post? I was using a plugin, in PS, but it adds a lot of blur.

photoshop is enough. but it is blur of sort. easy to overdo it.

The software used is CINEMA 4D [Octane render?], but there is an interesting demo by Mr.Jeremy Cox.

Did this ever get beyond the state of an experiment? Would something like this still work with V-Ray 6?

I pay a lot of money for lenses that don’t have this issue :). I never really understood adding it into an image unless you want to mimic an old camera.
