Hey, been a bit quiet lately, just finished a proposal for a ceramics studio and thought i would use our new Xfrog Tree Collection, THER ARE NO PHOTOSHOPPED TREES IN THIS RENDER!!!, a grass overlay, colour correction, and a slight sky were the only photoshopping that happened, these trees are unbelievable, will post some close ups next week…
So you are saying that these trees are models? Thats amazing if they are…did you make them or did you get them some where, if so…where? Great work by the way.

These trees are all models with the very last 2 levels of the trees heirachy being clipmaps, so in alot of the cases its just the twigs and leaves that are clip maps,which i believe makes a huge difference in file size, i saw a large evermotion tree being over 30 megs after being broght into sketchup, which is crazy, the biggest xfrog tree, after being crunched in xfrog, will be 11 megs which i can live with so the overall filesaize is managable
Nomer: getting the trees into sketchup is a bit of a run around but i dont believe too time consuming but u do have to open it with one of the provided 3d application to export to .3ds

I downloaded a sample tree from their website. In 3DS Max I didn’t see any textrues in the viewport. (Maybe I imported it incorrectly.)
But in SketchUp it loaded up perfectly. I think it uses tiff or pnf with alphas so you actually get a WYSIWYG in SU. All you need to do is hide the edges of the leaf clipmaps. Then it’s setting up the clipmaps in V-Ray.

Wow man, if u could do that it will be very kind of you, please, i’d realy like to see how u made that grass, what map u did use there.
Where did you get the Xfrog trees from? From their reseller list I just end up with 404’s. Are they active many more? Doesn’t seem to be an update on the site since 2006.
Do you also have their software to generate your own trees? Or just the collection?
That European collection looks very tempting.
we bought a couple the European being one of them, there are plugins for max and C4d and a standalone Editor for polycrunching, we purchased them straight from the website, the “shop online” section.
i also tried the 30 day demo plugin for C4d to generate your own trees but found it very complicated and could never manage to get anywhere…
i recommend you buy the Xfrogtune aswell, we tried without and one of the bigger trees came up to 68 Megs the models they supply in the dvds are rediculously hi poly so they need tweaking
I spent some time to work on the Birch sample available at their site. I cleaned up the young birch to not have duplicate materials and create V-Ray clip maps for the leafs. I also made components out of the billboards with V-Ray clipmaps.
I just used them to add vegetation to a model I’m working on. With the 3D trees in the front and the billboards in the back I’ve been able to place quite a few trees while still leaving the model manageable. This is looking very promising.
With a ruby script to spray on components this looks like a very nice way to produce vegetation.
I’ve already tried the xfrog.
But there’s a problem when I use vray, that vray material must be re-mapping again, cause of some tree must be made transparent background.
Did you have the same issue? Cause for me, It’s not simple..hehehe for somekind of tree.
