My AMD X2 - 4200 appears to have went belly up on me. I was working on my main computer when I noticed the the 4200 wasn’t coming up on DR.
The power was still on but no graphics on the screen. I powered down and tried to reboot but still no boot. The board is an Asus AV8-N and the power light would show on the board but I don’t get the voice saying it’s booting.
I figured the board was bad so I replaced it with another of the same, but still no boot at all. I then changed the power supply, same result, nothing.
I can only guess it’s the cpu, I’ve never had one go out on me before. It’s only six months old.
If it were the harddrive wouldn’t it a least boot to the bios?
unfortinantly it sounds like a cpu. If hd would fail then as you say it would boot until it would say non boot disk, or disk error which would mean that your hd is not responding for boot.
I suggest placing a new cpu in there. It could have been that it was overheating and fried…infact I had the same thing happen couple of month ago.
I would suggest you try unplugging even not necessary.. so only leave the psu, cpu, 1 stick or ram, video card and 1 HDD see if it boots tehn.
If no god either get yourself a new X2 or if you can borrow some sort of socket 939 spu to test that would be good as well.
Thanks guys for the help. I took it to a local shop and they confirmed the cpu was dead.
I don’t understand why, however. The temperature never got above 43 C even under heavy render load for a day or more. I had it set up to shut down at 60C to prevent damage. So I don’t think it was heat related. I have two other x2 3800’s. I hope this was just a fluke on the 4200!!
if a cpu was dead you would get beeping on the pc speaker. im getting something simular however no beeps. everything seems to be booting but no graphics at all. my guess is the mobo is faulty
Mobo was my first thought as well, I bought a new one and installed it. No good, didn’t fix it.
I’m now having problems with one of my 3800’s. It keeps shutting down for no apparent reason. When I reboot it gives me the blue screen and says theres a problem, but not what the problem is.
Man, I’m getting real nervous about these chips. I’ve been monitoring my temps very closely and they have been fine.
If your computers are shutting down for no reason. I would check/do the following.
1. Check temps (sounds like you already have this covered)
2. Check Event Log and see if any errors around the time of the crash
3. Download and burn the memtest cd ISO boot the computer from the cd and scan all the way thru the memory. My 2gbs takes about 45mins from memory
4. Get a program to check the HDD for problems. Most drive manufactorers have software available… especiall Western Digital have some excellent software.
5. Make note when it happens and if its at a certain time or after doing something specific.
6. Update everything (bios, video card drivers, sound card drivers, motherboard drivers.. the works)
7. If it happens often start the computer with the absolute minimum hardware that you can. I.e. 1 stick of memory, video card, psu, cpu, and one harddrive. Remove/unplug all other devices.

FYI, my X2 has been run for around 3100hours.. with only down time to reboot or transfer to mates place for games :-)… that time equates to about 99% uptime or something since purchase.
I noticed in my thread about my x2 awhile ago that you said you were overclocking your x2’s. Is this still the case? or was that just a once off test?
Most unexplained shutdowns to blue screen i find are either heat/fan related or bad memory. Run memtest or get the one from Microsoft to test your RAM out.
