I have tried three scenes and each one simply crashes MAX. It shows loading plugins at 0% and MAX crashes.
This happens when using Vantage’s live link ?
Vantage doesn’t really communicate back to 3ds Max in order to crash it, maybe if there is an issue with the live link scripts.
Can you tell me step by step what you are doing or send me one of these scenes so I can try it here ?
Greetings,
Vladimir Nedev
I guess I didn’t think it through. I was exporting a V-Ray scene when it crashes MAX. I guess it isn’t a Vantage issue.
There is one possibility actually - if you use the live link, Vantage may run out of GPU memory while loading the scene, which might cause the GPU driver to crash, which in turn “removes the GPU device”,
which is a condition 3ds Max is not programmed to handle, which causes it to eventually crash when you try to do something in a viewport.
If you are just exporting a .vrscene file, this cannot happen.
You can try using the live link in case the issue is strictly related to exporting a .vrscene file.
Most of the stuff that happens when exporting a .vrscene file and when starting a live link is the same however, so it might crash in the same way.

Vladimir Nedev
Can you please send the scene to support so they can report it to the V-Ray for 3ds Max team ?
It sounds like something that affects the Vantage, V-Ray GPU and Chaos Cloud workflows, so pretty important to fix.

Vladimir Nedev
Can you send it to me ?

I’ll upload shortly.
here you go Adobe Acrobat
I deleted my Forest Pro elements and the live link doesn’t crash, however, nothing happens in Vantage, and exporting still crashes MAX.
Okay, I stripped my scene down to just the building and it worked. I had to remove my Railclone elements too, so I am not sure if I needed to delete my Forest Pro.
export crash MAX.
This crash is reproducible in the latest STABLE nightly build, but not in the latest MASTER nightly build.
So it must have been fixed recently, but not yet picked in the stable nightly.
Live link gives this error
This seems to happen when using DR with GPU IPR.
This is how the Vantage live link works and is probably one of the few situations where you would use this.
We have to fix this mostly because of Vantage.
Thanks for the scene !

Vladimir Nedev
You are welcome. It has nothing to do with Railclone or Forest Pack? Should I download a nightly?
The fix is NOT in the stable nightly builds, and you probably don’t have access to the other ones.
These other nightly builds are not suitable for a production environment anyway, just for testing.
I haven’t debugged it yet, but based on what you say, it should be related to Railclone/Forest Pack, yes.

I resaved the scene for 3ds Max 2020 and with the latest STABLE nightly the live link doesn’t crash.
Not sure whether something was lost in the resave process.
Can you try 3ds Max 2020 to confirm it works for you too and nothing is lost ?
Greetings,
Vladimir Nedev
Unfortunately, I don’t have 2020 installed.
