Creating Gaussian Splats natively

So far, all the methods to create Gaussian splats in almost all DCC software involve:
Creating camera array.
Rendering images from each camera position.
Bring images to PostShot or other software for training.

If you can optimize the workflow, and automatically generate not the camera array, but generate the point cloud of the actual splats, and use the light tracing result to generate how each splat looks like from different angle, this process could shorten the existing workflow dramatically, and REALLY make VRay a killer app that brings ANY 3d scenes into VR, web embed and so on effortlessly.

Since Chaos is also developing tools for virtual production, if this becomes a reality, instead of throwing a huge vrscene into your virtual volume, a virtual scene made with gaussian splats will be MUCH easier for real time rendering, and provide a MUCH fast and realistic result.

I heard Vlado mentioned many years ago that he was working on it. Now Gaussian splatting is gaining more and more momentum every day, I don’t want VRay to lose this opportunity. This will be a killer app!

Yes, this is an ongoing topic. We were not happy with the results before. Since then, some new materials have come out. So the topic is not closed, and we will investigate further how this process could be automated and made easier in general.

Thank you for sharing your vision with us. Please forward my greetings and best wishes to your devs. I think this feature could make the biggest jump in the CG industry in decades. A potential Scientific and Technical Awards candidate!

Just brought my suggestion to Vlado during the last meeting. Glad he’s on board. This move will reshape the whole industry if it happens.
