Deep EXR - DeepToPoints in Nuke seems incomplete

Hello,

I have a question regarding the deep EXR output. In this tutorial the author generates a point cloud from a deep image which includes even objects hidden behind foreground objects, like in the picture below:

full

cropped

I have a very simple scene with 4 boxes and no matter what I do in V-Ray setup I can only have a cropped result like this, which occludes hidden objects:

Before I go any deeper with this I would like to know if this is even possible in V-Ray?

I would be curious to find out what renderer that was and what option it has to do that extra data, I don’t see it in vray.

I just played around with the settings, you can get the geo to show through in deep if you set the opacity to a lower value like 0.9 for example. While this is physically inaccurate it will give you the deep points behind the occluded geo.

It seems the author of the video also doesn’t know:

Not sure if V-Ray can do this. I’ll ask around.

EDIT: Okay, the most likely explanation is that the .exr in the video was just a merge of different deep .exrs. I made a similar scene to yours (4 boxes) and rendered a deep .exr for each of them separately. Afterward, I just combined them via DeepMerge.

@morbid_angel_1 interesting approach with that lower opacity, it might come in handy, thanks.

@hermit.crab you’re right, I must have missed that comment. I wrongly assumed that this is one of the main “out of the box” feature of the Deep data and I’m probably just doing something wrong, but it seems it isn’t.

Thanks for the effort with that separate 4 boxes rendering and using DeepMerge, but I was hoping that this is IT - the one holy pass which I could use to properly defocus many objects behind the glass with an IOR distortion. Well, guess not

Anyway, thanks for the help guys!
