Denoiser

Hi,

You did a great job with the denoiser: I am really happy with it, it’s a really great feature, thanks a lot !
The only con so far for me is that you can’t denoise render elements like RawReflection, RawGI etc … Only the RGB pass is denoised, or maybe I missed something ?

Thank you,

You didn’t miss anything, we just didn’t have time to implement this for the 3.40 release. It’s on the “to do” list though.

Best regards,
Vlado

Ok no worry, I’ll wait !

Thank you

How does the denoiser work? You add the render element and you’re set? Is there a way to adjust it after the render is finished? Or you change the preset and re-render?

I think, once the render is done, you can open the elements tab and play with it.

Yes.

Is there a way to adjust it after the render is finished?Yes, there is a button to recalculate the denoised result.

Vlado

got it! by default you need to look at the VRayDenoiser pass, not the RGB Color.

Right, there is a request somewhere to switch to the denoised result after the render and we might do that.

Isn’t that what that other mode option is?

The way the Denoiser is working, almost makes me want the glow/glare to work the similarly. I spent a minute looking in the VFB for a denoiser button.

How does the denoiser work with animation frames that have been rendered over a network - is there a separate program that redoes it once the sequence is finished to start the temporal denoise?

Yes, there is a command-line tool called vdenoise.exe which is located in the same folder as the rest of the V-Ray tools (irradiance map viewer etc). There is a shortcut to it in the Start Menu, but Lele also coded a MaxScript GUI for it and you can find it here:

Denoising a sequence with vdenoise really helps to stabilize the animation while keeping the details, compared to denoising each frame separately.

Cool, thank you! Looking forward to testing this

God, I can’t wait to try this…

What you mean by denoise animations with frame blending or something like that in video for 3.4?

It means using the standalone vdenoise.exe tool. Because vdenoise.exe looks at several frames at once, it can do a much better job than denoising frames one by one. It can also help with other animation-related issues like shimmering due to fine geometry or textures.

Does the vdenoise.exe tool require a particular file format to function properly? (eg exr or vrimg file?)

Yes, it works only with multi-channel OpenEXR files and .vrimg files.

I’ve got a question about the built-in denoiser. When I render regions, my previous render in the VrayDenoiser element becomes all black. Why is that? All other elements in the dropdown list remain unchanged, only the VrayDenoiser element gets all black. Am I missing something? How can I make my previous render in VrayDenoiser remain stored when rendering regions?

There is no specific reason; I need to fix this.
