Designer Chair WIP

Saturday night and I’m kind of working on a chair design
Will put some leather seating on sitting parts

First attempt

Second attempt

I still like my first attempt, but the proportions are slightly off.
Second version has lost a little something. Not sure

BTW it’s Zuliban’s studio set-up which I’ve adjusted to suit. A little post work in Pshop.

Has anyone seen a chair like this?
Hope not

C&C’s more than welcome

Geoff

second attempt looks much better mate and I dont think I’ve seen a chair like that so far. is it meant to be formed plate?

Nice renders and the design looks cool but I don’t think I would lean back in that thing.

Tried leather on it

Don’t like it at all.
Going to try small rectanglular cushions or might try something completly different.

Silconbauhaus it is folded stainless. The first attempt was 4mm which looks too thin. 2nd attempt in 8mm and looks too thick! I’ll try umm…6mm maybe!

Rerender a few people have mentioned that. I might try pulling the seat forwards a bit, but then again…trust me. I’m a designer!

Glad no-one has seen one like it. Every time I think I’ve come up with a chair design, I see one like it.

Geoff

Hehe, well I guess if you sit in it first I’ll trust you :stuck_out_tongue:

perhaps it would be cool to just have strips of padding and leather, maybe in a chevron pattern or maybe even dots.

Nice render, but just looking at it and thinking about sitting back makes me feel awkward.

“Trust me im a designer” The famous last words of many a designer

RErender I wouldn’t sit on that first! Some good ideas with the padding there. I’ll try the strips first.

DaForce I’m not a professional designer, just an amateur! Nothing I’ve ever designed has been made (yet).

I think I’ll adjust the geometry a tad because everyone is too scared to sit on my chair

Geoff

I’ll have one. How much?

Even if it falls over everytime you try and sit on it!
Going to adjust a bit tonight and make it a bit more stable looking.
I should be able to get one made fairly easily though once I’m happy with it.
(Err…where you joking?)
Might get one made for a laugh!

Geoff

I have a thing about chairs - pleasure to the eye is more important than comfort imho

i like like practicality in my chairs hehe. this one i use isnt as comfortable as the other one however it rolls better and i roll alot between computers

I like your renders, but when comes to design and stability. U should be more carefull … :?

changed the cushions and messed about a little with the geometry
No shop work (apart from text)

how unstable is this! Needs a fillet on the bottom curve of the leg…
Need to re-think it all when I’m not so tired!

Geoff

Still looks fairly unstable to me. I would think that the leg would need to go/stretch further back, but then you ahve a problem where the front is unstable and if you lean forward for any reason … you end up on your face. hehehe

don’t really know whether my opinion is right or wrong, but look at the elevation, if the tip top of the chair is given force form the right, what is going to hold the chair from falling backwards..

I think it´s nice. I like the second one. I won´t let my children play around it

-I lost my fingers playing whith a chair as a child

hey, i like the design concept.

perhaps it would be nice to have the back piece made from the cut-out and follow the exact same profile as the leg piece…that way you could laser cut the back piece from one piece of sheet, and do the bending for the back and the leg sections at the same time… just a thought!

also, you’d need to put some sort of feet onto it ideally (can be really small pads set in from the edge or something…) to stop it hight pointing on the underside of the base plate.

trust me, i’m a furniture designer!

Thanks for the tips soreal. Kind of got a bit lost in your explanation. Will add some kind off feet. What furniture have you designed?
Little update. tweaked the geometry of the legs again, and added a fillet.

Looks a bit more sturdy. Hey you could almost sit on it now!

Geoff

those supports definately add a bit of realism due to their practical nature

@geoff
sorry about the explanation, got a bit carried away, think it’s probably best to just leave you to it!

i trained as a furniture designer at uni (loughborough) and graduated in 2000. since then i’ve mostly been working as a visualiser for an exhibit design company…not time for much furniture design unfortunately, although it’s something i intend to get back into in the future.

here’s something i’ve been working on recently though, a side table.
hopefully going to build a working prototype before christmas.

are you designing furniture for production or just for fun?

your chair kind of reminds me of this rietveld design classic - http://www.artificial.de/images/GAL/designer/rietveld/zigzag.jpeg

i’ve seen the DNA stair stuff - very impressive!

cheers.
