Displacement from PhoenixFDOceanTex applied on a simulation mesh

Hello, I posted a question about partially displacing an alembic mesh using a PhoenixFDOceanTex and V-Ray Displacement Modifier, in the V-Ray for 3dsMax part of the forum, but maybe it’s more appropriate to discuss it here ? :Post on V-Ray for 3dsMax

Hmmm, this is quite complex. How about if you export it to a VDB instead of ABC and load it in a Phoenix Simulator or a Volume Grid - the Ocean Mesh mode should pick it and generate an ocean the easy way, and then you could plug the ocean tex in its Rendering displacement slot. I’ve done some tweaks for Houdini VDBs so the Ocean Mesh mode is expected to work with them. Please ping me if you run into any issues.

Hello Svetlin, thanks for the hint.

I tried rendering a VDB using VRay Volume Grid set on Ocean Mesh Mode, combined with a phoenix ocean tex. By tweaking the value of ocean level, we get a result where the Houdini VDB is blended with the ocean texture. So I have a question on the ocean boundaries, is it possible to take control of the generated ocean dimensions ? or is it always generate as an “infinit plane” ?

I tried also with Mesh mode on the Volume Grid, with ocean tex applied on both a Volume Grid and a plane, couldn’t find a way to blend the volume grid with the plane.

Hey, it always generates an infinite plane, but you could use a V-Ray clipper to limit it. Would this work for you?

Yes this could work, thanks !
