Distributed rendering on viz 2006

I am trying to get vrayadvanced to DR with viz 2006. i haven’t made much progress. When i start the vrayspawner60.exe on the server machine it errors out because it can’t start the vraydummy60.xml. All the files are in the correct places per the user manual. I sent off a copy of the log to chaos but haven’t heard back. Any thoughts? Does anyone that has viz 2006 actually have DR working?

Also, is there a way to get the user manual onto my machine instead of me having to access the inetrnet and go to the chaos website, log in and then go to the manual?

You might try the steps outlined here http://www.chaosgroup.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9201&highlight=viz+2006

Hope it helps :slight_smile:

i have seen this thread and at the end of the thread it essentially says that it doesn’t work.

I’ll have to try that…wish me luck.

Mike,
Did it work?

Has anyone got DR working with VIZ 2006 using 1.46 or 1.47.02?

didn’t work…but it may be that i’m doing it wrong…the instructions are a bit vague…i took the backburner.xml file, renamed it to vraydummy60.xml, replaced the vraydummy60.xml file in the viz root with it but it still errors on the opening of the xml file. I have emailed chaos twice now with no response…my conclusion is that chaos doesn’t know how to make Vray DR with viz 2006 at this point…seems like false advertising at this point.

This is getting really frustrating for me. I’ve been holding off on upgrading my Vray and VIZ until the final release of Vray (with solid DR) we all know this story. I currently use VIZ 4 with 1.09 for production. The DR is pretty solid and everything works. However I feel like I’m living in the past and need to upgrade. I would also like to take advantage of some of the new features. In my tests the new version is much faster for me.

I skipped the VIZ 5 upgrade (bad move) so the only option for me was VIZ 2006 which I finally did buy 5 months ago. Since then I’ve been waiting for a version that will work with DR. I’ve been working with it for non production just to get up to speed and now I’m plagued with this missing bitmap problem for which there seems to be no solution (bitmap textures randomly disappear, see the thread). I can’t fall back onto VIZ 5 because I don’t have it. Therefore I have no alternative but to continue using this outdated setup.

I’m starting to think I made bad call by upgrading to VIZ 2006 instead of MAX but I was sure they had finally made the two products consistent with each other. This is obviously not the case. I really hope the new version comes out soon and makes this all go away. It seems like I’ve been in limbo for the past year. WAHHHHHHHHHHH, enough pouting now I feel better. :?

have you tried to use a new vraydummy60.max file instead of the one provided with vray?
U can do it saving an empty scene from viz, renaming it with same name and replacing the original file
It seems to me the same old issue that I had with my viz 2005

let me know

a.

Hi Arobert,
I currently use viz 4 with 1.47.03 which is the current build I think. I have no problems with it and DR also works with viz 4.
I have heard about problems with viz 2006 thats why i haven’t upgraded from viz 4.

Cheers
TD

Hi TD,
Really? I don’t know why I havn’t tried that. I tried 1.46 but it seemed slow. I guess I just got stuck on 1.09 If this works it would be great. I’ll try it.
Thanks!

Well, at least I can use the newest build with VIZ 4. I’m glad Chaos still supports it!

The process doesn’t get past the xml file so playing with the max file would be meaningless at this point. I go to the vrspawn.log to see what happens and this is the case…the xml file errors and terminates before anything happens.
mh

I’ve done this about five times and it crashes every time spawner starts. If I use the xml file that comes with vray it starts to open the vraydummy60.max file and shuts down. Then it goes into an endless loop of this until I terminate spawner.

sorry if I sent you on a wild goose chase.

this sounds crazy but…

Older versions but you might try starting the 2006 spawner while the viz4 spawner is running.

Also, go to viz2006/network/ and look for a viz.log file or something like that and check for any errors. If there are any what do they say?

To get DR to work on VIZ 2006, on all render slaves you need to create a file vrayspawner.ini in the root folder of VIZ with this contents:

[Directories]
AppName=<VIZ root folder>\3dsviz.exe

If you are having problems with loading vraydummy60.max, or if it is missing you can optionaly do this:

  • Start VIZ with an empty scene;
  • Save the scene as vraydummy60.max in the root folder of VIZ;
  • Open the Render Scene dialog and tick “Network render”;
  • Start backburner2 manager and server;
  • Render the scene;
  • Copy the files vraydummy60.max and <backburner2Folder>\Network\ServerJob\vraydummy60.xml to the root folder of VIZ on all render slaves.

If the render slaves fail to start for some reason after you run vrayspawner60.exe, look at the files c:\vrspawner.log and <VIZ root folder>\Network\VIZ.log for any error messages.

Sometimes, if several different 3dsmax/VIZ versions are installed over one another, or just copied without proper installation, 3dsmax/VIZ may refuse to start when run by the vrayspawner application, because it cannot find the proper backburner DLLs. This can be corrected by adding the path to the backburner2 folder to your PATH environment variable.

Best regards,
Vlado

Vlado,
I followed your instructions and still the process fails at the xml level. Here is the log…

Thank you for your reply Vlado. I have been doing exactly as you suggested with no results on two different computers with identical results.

Add the vrayspawner.ini file as required.

I start viz save a file in the root viz 2006 folder called:vraydummy60.max

Run a job on backburner, copy the backburner.xml file to the viz folder and re-name it to vraydummy60.xml.

Here is my spawnerlog

To add the backburner2 folder to your PATH environment variable.
I went to: configure paths, external files and added backburner2 to the path. Still no results.
