Do <UDIM> tagged images show up in the viewport?

I spent the better part of an hour trying to get vray to recognize my <UDIM> image sequence.
It kept giving me this error:

So I was thinking I was doing something wrong. But come to find out it renders fine even though I get the error message.

Is this normal? Is there a way to display these textures in the viewport?
Am I doing something wrong?

I don’t think its vray, have you tried it with regular lambert/mental ray? I don’t think that maya recognizes udim tags.

Yep, it’s just Maya complaining that it doesn’t recognize the <udim> tag. If you want to view the texture in the viewport, you can try converting the texture tiles to something that Maya can recognize. Search for Mari2Maya script, it seems to do this, bu I haven’t used it.

I think its possible, if you were to script a way to read in each tile and shift it to its coordinate then combine all the maps via some add operation, it should work, question is would maya display this at the end of all ?

maybe this will help.?

its working if you use this script to built the shader tree… the mel is using mudbox naming so you have to rename your UDIMs
