DOF in Post

What is the best way to apply DOF in PS? It is taking way too long, for me, in V-Ray. I have tried PS’s lens blur; is there a better way? DOF Pro, which I used to own, doesn’t work in PS 64 and I am not sure it was better than PS’s lens blur, which is just okay.

I use this: frischluft.com - Lenscare Description

Works quite nicely.

But in AE, I mean.

I have seen that for After Effect, however I don’t use AF, anymore.

Cool, they have it for PS, too!

In VRay, if you use the shademap, you can apply the DOF in a few seconds. Same goes for Moblur. Last time I checked, the shademap only worked if you render on 1 pc and not on DR. But that was with VRay 2.4. They may have fixed it since then for DR. Can anybody confirm?

I remember reading about shademap, but I could never figure it out.

There is also DOF Pro by Richard Rosenman.

But DOF Pro only works in PS 32 bit.

I havent tried DOF Pro but the site says that 4.0 supports win 32/64

also I havent had to do any DOF inside PS in a long time but will lens effects filter use the zdepth pass to create the DOF effect? Im thinking like AE does…

You could download AutoDesk Composite 2014 (it’s free) and use the zdepth pass. Composite is easy to use.

that’s how I have been doing it. but its not very good, at least not for me.[quote=“Alan Iglesias, username:Alan_Iglesias”]

The native PS lens blur is horrid. Frischluft is awesome.

I was able to use V-Ray lens blur without a huge hit in render times, so maybe I don’t have to do it in post. I did download the Frischluft trial, however the button to use an image was grayed; I’ll have to look into that.[quote=“FSGFX, post:28, topic:45966, username:FSGFX”]

I think DOF Pro supports Windows 32/64 but it specifically says it doesn’t work in Photoshop 64bit. Bummer.

That is a bummer :frowning:

Just an FYI to anyone wanting to use DOF Pro in Photoshop CC 2015 (or any other 32 bit plugins)… it was impossible to find and install but there is a 32 bit version available, it just isn’t selectable from the Creative Cloud installer. You can find the link here, http://prodesigntools.com/adobe-cc-2015-direct-download-links.html, and you have to follow the instuctions on the page, otherwise the link doesn’t work. After you install it and sign in to CC with your usual ID it will then show up in the usual list of CC. Hope this helps out.

VFB+ 2.6 has just been released which introduces a post process DOF effect right in the the frame buffer.

Looks pretty good.
