my next workstation will probably be a threadripper (3?) but im doing initial research now.

i expect ill go for 128GB ram.

ive read conflicting reports on ECC ram.

on many forums you will see people stating that the more memory you have, the more important EEC becomes, as errors creep in. , and with 128GB you really need it for stability.

however here, ive seen most people seem to use non-EEC ram even for 128GB configs.

given its slower and costs more.. is there a benefit for our line of work? how do these “errors” manifest.. i dont want a crashy machine.

Haven’t see any benefits at all to ECC RAM for rendering, like you said they cost more and are much slower than typical RAM
For TR you would want high frequency memory, as it will give you better CPU performance. 3200 MHz RAM will give you over 10% speed boost for the 2990wx compared to 2133 MHz
And this doesn’t mean typical RAM crashes more for Vray..

I have 2x 2699 V3 at office with ECC RAM, feels the same as any other system we have. Any scene that crashes on TR will crash on this machine too
