Enhanced Billboards - the 3D Billboard

Since I discovered how displacement can be speeded up for exterior scenes

I’m in displacement fever.

For example billboards can be a little bit enhanced by a light additional thickness. Only an inverted and bluried transparnecy map is for displacement needed.

Also good for displacement is to set an object custom mesh - disable simple planes and set 16 initial grid quads. So I try to be sure that enough polygons for displacement are available.

My example image is a little part from a very big image. It’s a first attempt for this method.

Re: Enhanced Billboards - the 3D Billboard

Have you seen the “displacement” video fernando rentas did? about cutoff etc. I’ve never used displacement until then and now. looking at this image, perfect for my aerial perspective.

thanks for the idea micha!

Re: Enhanced Billboards - the 3D Billboard

Yes, I remember me. Nice idea, but in this case a problem could be that the cutoff must 100% match the diffuse color map. Also the transparency map has more fine details at the edges.

Re: Enhanced Billboards - the 3D Billboard

ok. noted, I’ll try both.

Hi Micha
This is a brilliant idea.

Artupato,

where can I find the video you are talking about? Isn’t it the on chaosgroup tutorials section called “Vray for Rhino -bump and displacement”?

Thanks
