Environment Background image renders out BLURRY in virtual staging, while the Original image is SHARP !!

Hello !

I think I am using all settings correctly, with the Environment section Bitmaps’ settings as below: -

Background: Texture type-> Environment; Mapping-> Screen
GI: Texture type → Environment; Mapping-> Spherical
Reflection: Texture type->Environment; Mapping->Spherical
Secondary Matte: Texture type->Environment; Mapping->Screen

I am using a PNG image for all of the four above, and which is quite sharp.. please refer the first image titled “Photomatch.png” attached to my post.

However, when I render, the background image that renders out is significantly blurry (almost unusable for virtual staging imagery); please see the red circled areas on the second image attached to my post titled “RENDER.JPG”. As you can easily see, almost all of the details in the wood floor are lost and the floor appears to be “fudged out”.. Also, the metallic chrome knobs on the cooking range-microwave have lost their sharpness.. The Top Ceiling Light looks dull and drab… Overall, the rendered image’s background appears out-of-focus, and dull…; while the original PNG image is SHARP, and BRIGHT as you can see.

I have checked other posts, and I confirm I am NOT using depth of field at all; so that option is not viable. Also, I tried taking the render out at the HIGH+ Quality setting… but to no avail… :frowning:

I ALSO tried setting the filter blur setting to ZERO (in the texture image file section, under the Environment Background Bitmap settings; please see the attached image titled “INSET.JPG” attached to my post); however, the result was the same.. BLURRY !!!

Could anybody point out to me what am I doing wrong…? Many thanks to the GURUS here, in advance !!

Did you use the denioser?

Yes please.. Vray denoiser. All default parameters; Effects updated at the end.

I think this is the reason. Try turning it off.

Turned OFF Denoiser… same result sir.. :frowning: Blurry..

If lens efects are on try turn off..

Hello Mr. Kenancakir… Thank you for joining the conversation ! If you remember you helped me previously on these forums too, regarding the camera alignment problem while virtual staging!.. Thank you so much for coming to help again sir… duly appreciate your gesture…

Kindly wait, I will tell you if the lens effects are on or off

Thanks again !!

Sir, I checked, (please see the attached screenshot), there were two settings on in the lens effects section on the VFB, titled Hardware accelerated and Interactive.

I turned them off, but there was no improvement in the background image which remained blurred.

Sir… like the last time around (wherein you helped me greatly by looking at the Sketchup file itself), would it be possible for you to have a look at the SketchUp file directly so that you could check and see all the settings for yourself.. If you reply yes, I will send you the file.

Please advise, Mr. Kenancakir sir. Thank you.

Keep render size exactly the same as the original photo, camera settings also needs adjustment may be white balance adjustment.. If you load the file as skp 2019 i will try..

Thank you for your interest sir !! DEEPLY appreciated…

Here is the link to download the SKP file (saved as 2018 version) and also the background image PNG…

Thank you !!

Hi, i couldn’t find a way to get sharper resault, it seems increasing the output size gives better resault, 3000 for example..

Oh, okay Mr. Kenancakir.. thanks for investing time in trying for the solution sir. Never mind, will make do with the same as-is.

But that also raises a question… it seems Corona render provides more sharper solutions than V-Ray…? Thats quite strange.. wouldn’t you agree… Maybe Chaos group can shed some light on it…

Anyways, thank you so much for your interest and time sir.

I have a very small query to ask of you Mr. Kenancakir.. and it may seem to be a stupid question to ask an expert like you..

Is there a simple, straightforward way I can change the color of materials (ONLY the diffuse color.. not the texture map) in V-ray. I know I can do this in Sketchup through the material editor by tweaking the HLS, HSB or RGB value sliders, and keep the “Colorize Textures” option checked on, in the Vray drop-down menu settings (on the “Extensions” Tab in the Sketchup Toolbar); HOWEVER, out of curiosity sake, I just want to understand if there was a SIMPLE way I could do the following through the Vray Asset Editor: -

Suppose, I wanted to change the color of, say, plain cotton sofa, from light blue to light green, what path might I take inside of Vray Asset Editor. Many thanks for your time, again Mr. Kenan!!

You can add color correction to the material.. I have never used corona render..

Hi Macho3001,

Here are a couple of things you can try to increase the sharpness of your background image:

  1. Disable the screen projected texture’s filtering:
  2. A better option might be to render the scene with a black background (no screen projected texture) and then add a background in the VFB (V-Ray Frame Buffer) like so:

Please note that if you go with option 1 there will always be some difference between the original image and the background in the render.
The reason is that V-Ray uses raytracing to re-sample the image and ‘recreate’ the pixels.
This will inevitably lead to some additional filtering.

As far as Corona is concerned - I don’t think there is a big difference between the two engines in terms of the overall image sharpness.
Both engines are sampling the image in a similar way.
One thing that might have left you with that impression is the post Sharpen filter available in Corona’s frame buffer.
People use it quite often to increase the sharpness of the rendered images.
The good news is that a new Sharpening filter will be introduced in the next version of V-Ray for SketchUp (V-Ray 5, update 2).

The easiest way to do this is by right clicking on the specific slot (with the map you would like to correct), select ‘Wrap In’ and choose one of the correction maps that V-Ray provides.
The most common option is the ‘Color Correction’ (it lets you tweak the hue, saturation and brightness).
Other good options are the Spline and Bezier Curve maps.

Hope that helps,
