Faded Frosted Glass

Hi Everyone,

Would anyone have some tips or tricks they would not mind sharing on how to achieve this faded frosted glass look in the image below?

Kind Regards.

Personaly I would put a PNG behind normal glass

@Gadget_1 Would the semi transparent areas not need a opaque-transparent pattern that cause a noisy look?

Hi @jradle_1 & welcome to our forums!

An effect like this can be achieved by using a gradient texture in the transparency slot. Set a white base color and a transparency amount somewhere around 50%.

Hope that helps!

This does work, but unfortunately doing it this way you have no control over the repeat of the mask texture or where it starts/stops. (And 99% of the time the mask comes in at a tiny scale)

You can gain a little bit of control by using a texture fill*: both the Albedo and Mask should line up if you create the mask from the Albedo, then change it from the mask tab in the properties. If you add the mask first, the origin of the Albedo needs to be central to the surface (I think).

It also screws up positioning and scale of the textures/masks within Enscape if you scale/stretch the underlying geometry.

(*Does not have to be a “texture” - can be a few pixels of the same colour, as long as it’s an image file that is applied to the texture rather than a flat fill.)

Both ways produce a grainy ‘moir’ effect (Left leaf = Mask | Right = PNG)

(I’ve modeled this as a separate texture that can be placed in front or behind the glass so I can control where the fade starts/stops- same result no matter which side of the glass.)

This is a Sketchup specific issue, as Sketchup doesn’t provide us with the right UV coordinates/scale if there’s no texture defined in the underlying Sketchup material.

We’re in the Revit subsection of the forums here!

Thanks everyone for the feedback!

I will give these a try!

Regards.

Could be great if this problem could not be overseen again and be solved. This is the noisy look I mean. It’s not a solution or misunderstood it?

(As has been pointed out I know SU, not Revit, so the results might be different)

In theory you could add a faded out noise bump map (to the same fade rate as the others) and it should reduce/eliminate the grain pattern, but I didn’t have one made up to hand… this would be a work-around rather than a proper solution.
