Hi Chaos Team,
First of all, thank you for continuously improving V-Ray and Vantage. I’ve been using V-Ray for event and exhibition design for many years, and I have a feature request that I believe would be very valuable for many visualization artists.
Feature Request
I would love to see a dedicated Event Light (Volumetric Light) added to V-Ray for 3ds Max and Vantage.
At the moment, creating visible light beams requires combining standard V-Ray lights with environment fog or aerial perspective, then adjusting multiple parameters to achieve the desired effect. While this works, it is time-consuming and often requires a lot of trial and error.
Why this would help
In event, stage, concert, and exhibition visualization, visible light beams are used in almost every project. Designers frequently need:
- Moving head spotlight beams
- Wash light beams
- Narrow and wide volumetric beams
- Haze/fog-enhanced lighting
- Easy control over beam density, falloff, softness, and visibility
- Fast real-time feedback in Vantage
Existing Examples
Some renderers already provide much simpler workflows:
- D5 Render has dedicated Event Lights that instantly create realistic stage lighting.
- V-Ray for Maya includes volumetric lighting options that are not available in the same way for V-Ray in 3ds Max.
It would be fantastic if V-Ray for 3ds Max offered a similar dedicated solution instead of requiring environment fog setups for every scene.
Benefits
This feature would:
- Greatly simplify event and entertainment visualization workflows.
- Save artists significant setup time.
- Produce more consistent results.
- Make V-Ray and Vantage even stronger for stage, exhibition, broadcast, concert, and live event rendering.
Since Vantage is becoming an increasingly important real-time visualization tool, native support for dedicated volumetric event lighting would also be a huge advantage.
I hope the development team will consider adding this feature to the V-Ray and Vantage roadmap.
I’d love to hear what other users think. Would a dedicated Event/Volumetric Light improve your workflow as well?
Thank you for considering this suggestion!
