I’ve just seen feature on final render website… i want it!!

[

This reminds me a lot of the f-edge but it seems to have more options, and it looks more powerful.](http://www.finalrender.com/products/feature.php?UD=10-7888-35-788&PID=36&FID=556)

Been wished for in one way or another several times already

Vlado said they are probably going to do it, don’t know how much like the fR one it will be.

vray is not fR, but it’s a good idea…

your right vray is not fR, but you do realize chaosgroup, made this plugin available years ago right? Now fR AND MentalRay have implemented it into their renderers.

vray is not fR, but it’s a good idea…

Best regards

truer words we’re never spoken

there is however a problem with creating such plugin; while it works well on uniform edges, its a completely different story on the geometries with variable edge. How would you imagine it handle variable edge, what would be the beveled lendths and so on. There is much more to it then just simple bevel and in my opinion, chaos group should focus on developing the actual renderer with things like rQMC rather then some plugin that some one might some day use…get my drift?

And you cant compare this to the f-edge plugin since these are two different things.

How are they different, how does fr approach this?

I agree… People are already writing their own Vray plugins and shaders so it may just be simple enough to write your own.

On the other hand… has anyone tried f-edge with Vray?

I have…and its not what FR has. That is, it doesnt actually bevel the edges. It augments the surface normals at hard edges to fake the embossed look.

I think, and this is my own understanding of the fr method, is that it looks at the hard edge, and tesselates that with MTD with a radius specified by the shader.

I’ve tried it also and the GI screws with it.

@Morbid : I dont think so actually. Quote from the FR page :

This is a shader solution and not an actual geometry addition and therefore it acts very fast and can produce some surprisingly clean results.

And taking a close look at the “round” example the silloutte looks still edgy to me. I guess it’s the same as f-edge. Wich makes it completely unusable on CAD geometry for example as it needs welds and hard edges to determine where to create a round bump.
