Float part 2: blurs and anti aliasing

Hi Folks,

I’ve just done the second part of that article on float which covers blurring and antialiasing and how float works with them - it’s up at http://www.joconnell.com/view.php?category=Article&view=21 if you want a look.

double whammy!
Nice, concise, and most of all explanatory of every reason behind what is suggested.

Class, mate!

Lele

sweet, more reading for the tube tomorrow.

hi joconnell

i’ve just read your article this morning. thanks for the info, it’s something i was completely unaware of. please keep posting!

dumb question time - regarding float images, is there a viewer/plugin that can display the true range of brightness in an image? something to see to the extra hidden info.

You mean you guys read on the tube? I thought it was meant for sleeping, what with all that gentle rocking motion

Keep up the good work John. Really liked the “Its a floater write up”

Colin

HDRShop and HDRview.
Google them

Lele

ah, of course. told you it was a dumb question.

i put it down to being tired from driving to france saturday morning and back again last night.

I suppose it was not a booze-buying trip…

Lele

that was not the reason for going, we went for a nosey at Rouen.

but when in rome…

only bought a couple of boxes

lol!
Well, what can i say? well done!

Lele

Mmm… fleurie…

took the bubble butt car of yours to its homeland niko?

indeed we did. i love doing 90mph on european roads

IT GOES 90MPH!!!

with 4 people in it, boot full of alcohol, and it’s only a 1.4L

we should probably get this thread back on topic now…

we can get it back on track later, did i see the word alchohol?
hehe kidding, nice tutorial/document/whatever john

One thing I think is worth mentioning, vector motion blur is, by itself, not the cause for loosing intensity. The clamping of the colors is pretty much the sole cause. There is at least one 3d renderer (for max) that will correctly 2dBlur over bright objects. 3d motion blur will run into the same problem of loosing intensity if it is applied using clamped colors. MR is a good example of this for 3d blur, if you use only 16bit Integers, you get faded blurs, but when you use the 32 bit floats, you get the correct blur. Also, Brazil is a good example for 2dVector blurs. If you tell it to not clamp the colors before it applies the 2d blur, it works as expected.

But otherwise, I really enjoyed reading your write ups, thanks for sharing.

Yeah you’re right charley - It’s one of the redeeming features of the brazil motion blur and a very clever trick by the programmers - it’s a shame that Autodesk haven’t included it in the render effect version.

Glad to share - I’ve learned a tonne and continue to learn from other folks putting stuff out there so it’s good to give some back every now and then.

didnt you drink enough on the weekend?

obviously not… its tuesday and he IS able to type..
