Hi, currently Enscape only allows Fog to work vertically using height - is there a way to make the Fog work like a mist instead which is cloudier, the further the distance, like in this image here…
all it needs is a distance variable like Sketchup has already built-in to it.
Thank you
Hey @spadestick_1 - welcome to the forum!
I’d argue Enscape fog works just like you described. See as comparison my little test here:
I chose 34% Fog Intensity and 300m height. Each of the “mountains” is 225m high, just to give you a sense of the scale - check out the tiny trees I placed.
What the fog won’t do, is follow your geometry like it does in the photo you shared. I assume that’s what you mean by cloudier? That would involve fluid simulation, and that’s out of reach for now.
But it accumulates in the distance, and provides a nice gradient of opacity from near to far. If it’s this distance that you want to control, just use the Intensity slider - does that make sense?
Thank you Kaj for your welcome and reply - the trouble with your test is that the tops of the mountains / structures in far distance still show full clarity and the plaza in the foreground is showing fog.
I’ve done a test of my own - and the height limit of 300m is not even producing a vertical fog (I believe previous versions allowed to register an unlimited height manually (even though it didn’t show past 300m)).
the 1st image is straight from Sketchup, and the 2nd is Enscape doing nothing.
Here’s another example - foreground showing items clearly - background fading away.
Thank you!
The tops of the mountains in the distance show in full clarity because they are close to 300 m high. The fog accumulates over distance, so you don’t see the fog at 300 m high, but at 200 m you do see it clearly, especially if the camera goes below the threshold:

If I remember correctly it was always like that, the maximum height was even lower in early versions I believe.
Here’s a few beautiful shadows in the fog, too, achieved by disabling ray-traced sun shadows, and by doing so switching to the old version:

Your image looks like your model is not scaled correctly. That’s what I assume. Can you place some Enscape assets on it? Are they scaled normally compared?
The model I’ve shown is mountainous terrain that’s enormous in size - like 30x30km large by 1-2km tall… maybe Enscape’s fog is unable to cope with these kinds of sizes.
Also in prior versions of Enscape - like 3.5x… when in manually typed in 900m (even though it showed 300m), the fog would climb up to that height of 900m, now that’s gone. Please bring it back thanks!
Ah I see, so your mountains are above the 300 m threshold, now I get it. I see.
Option one: Have you considered moving the mountain model down, so it again falls below the 300 m threshold?
If this doesn’t work, Option two: Click “+ add a new idea” on this page and share your request with our product team: https://chaosenscape.ideas.aha.io/
*edit: I was just told that Enscape 4.2 Preview 1 contains a fix that allows you to increase fog height to 10 000 m
oh! 10,000m is great! thank you Enscape team!
now if only distance HAZE could be incorporated… much like pool water clarity when you dive - the further away the less you can see, visibility distance. It really is kind of a different effect / variable as seen in Sketchup, it is cheap one too (CPU-wise).
For now I think I have to play with the Depth Map that’s generated with the image… painful though just for something that simple.
@spadestick_1 , please, if you’d like for anything to be incorporated, leave us a description of it in the Chaos Enscape Ideas Portal: https://chaosenscape.ideas.aha.io/
Thank you
Hi again, I’m here to report back : I found out why the FOG was not existing for the mountainscape I posted earlier… the mountains were too tall! The fog was hiding UNDER the mountain geometry. :saint: Here’s an image of what happened when I positioned the camera under.
Can’t wait for the 4.2 update with 10km fog. THANKS!
Thanks for the update @spadestick_1 . Haha yeah that’s what I meant when I asked if you considered just moving the mountains down so they again fall under the 300 m threshold. I could be more clear next time
