omg. is that a new mat? And you guys are on version p already? How did you get those render times so low!!!
You killing us Vlado by showing stuff and don’t telling us when we get it! Arghhh…! Can’t wait! Soon can be so long…

robert
Awesome. Soon I can have topiary sculptures walking around my garden ![]()
color me impressed
Very cool! Reminds me of one of my favourite movies: Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands. Edward created a tyrannosaur out of a hedge in that movie. ![]()
So Vlado, when? WHEN?! ![]()

this looks like some kind of non-linear displacement.
killer feature.
Here is one more - fur with GI:
A larger version is here:

I guess sipping from that glass would feel just like … ehm … well, I guess you can imagine what I mean (luckily my wife is not a member of this forum)
.
Anyway, back on topic: can’t wait to play around with this feature, Vlado! As Tammo already mentioned, this looks like non-linear displacement. I’m curious what kind of smart method is the basis for this effect and how it’s implemented in the VRay suite of tools. Will the displacement bend amount and direction also be animatable, so we can create waving grass, hair, etc.? Or maybe the displacement can be influenced by space warps, such as gravity to let it hang and wind to let it wave? That’d be cool.
Will this feature be a part of VRay 1.1? If you consider the large amount of changes between 1.0 and 1.1, I can’t wait to see what version 2 will offer in the future! ![]()
Keep up the great work.
Cheers,
Metin
that is a wicked material!!!
You could do grass for example…
I don’t think it’s made for Hair only. Anyhow, hair is very difficult to do. Just imagen an animal with short hair like a cow.
But, this feature could be a breakthrough in displacement. Hope we won’t see crashes with more then 8 million polygones animore. (Usally i have to plaim the irradiance map for that)
Anyhow the flickering is still a problem with animated hair, I guess.

WOW, 1 question. Will it work with simcloth? 8)

And what if … this … isn’t displacement at all. I guess we’re only speculating so far, aren’t we? ![]()
It isn’t displacement ![]()
What is it then and how does it work? I guess it’s not simply fur from a plug-in, is it? I assume this is a special new feature for the new VRay version.
Is it shag with GI? now this is getting interesting ![]()
Very nice, tis a bit aliased though. but very nice, nonetheless.
can’t be shag. first one posted was without GI…
To clear some things up: this is not shag:hair, and it’s not displacement. It’s procedural geometry generated by VRay.
Here is another example of the statue of Lucy from the Stanford scanning repository The Stanford 3D Scanning Repository
The model has a little over 28 million faces; it is rendered inside 3dsmax. Obviously, the mesh itself was not in the scene, since Max can’t handle it, but is loaded on the fly while rendering. Everything else - materials and lighting - is from Max.
