Been trying to decide if it’s worth the investment. Does anyone think it makes that much of a difference to run DR over a gigabit network versus a 100 mbit one?
if you have enough machines I would think its an absolute necessity. We just installed it here after getting our renderfarm setup.
have had gigabit here for the past few monts and will never look back, its soooooo much better than 100bt. Althoug Im looking into fiber as another posibility soon

We’re doing some office renovations at the moment, and as part of the process the servers, my renderfarm, and the “graphics” studio are all getting gigabit - yeehaw!
most of mammas comes with Gbit onboard now, so basicaly the expense is WIRES and SWITCHES. We got 2 Sisco 16 Port Gbit Sisco Switches and the whole office has been rewired to CAT6… Is amazing, i am dragging and droping hunderds of megabytes worth of frames here and there in a matter of seconds…

I just found out at the store that I would need new CAT6 or 5e cables to gain the benefits. One more added expense I wasn’t expecting but I still went through on it.
All I can say is that it’s quite an amazing sight to see huge files being shuffled around as if they existed on one of your local hard drives.
are you sure you need new cables?
I guess there’s nothing absolutely saying that CAT5 cables wouldn’t work- you would just have to monitor transmission speeds for packet loss. Perhaps I didn’t need to make the jump to CAT6 and only from 5 to 5e. I found these articles below:

Look, we installed CAT6 in 6 points, ranging from 10 meters to 20 - all installation costed 400$, if you get cables and install by yourself it will be 3 times cheaper.

i can keep my 5e network and just buy a new switch and some network cards for the older computers.

If you need patch cords up to 25 feet, use CAT-5e stranded cable for ease of flexibility.
If you are making linger runs or going through walls or ceilings, I’d go ahead and use the CAT-6 UTP (solid) cables - if that seems a bit expensive, then go with the CAT-5e UTP.
