Grant Warwick- Mastering Vray: Material Ideas Needed.

First WIP, unfortunately I already created this bastard a couple of years ago EXACTLY but lost everything in a hard drive failure.
the values have to be tweaked very tightly or the translucency throws out wrong colors.

This one look like photo taken with a flash. Did you use the same lighting on all material or not?

The reasoning behind different materials having different lighting is because I test them with a range of different HDR’s.

In this case, a clear blue sky with the sun behind camera.

Hi Grant,

I’m not sure if you responded previously. My question was whether this first pre-sale round of materials will be available as a .vrmat format. Thanks,
Andy

Hey Andy, I did in fact answer your question haha!

At first, no, but I do 100% plan on converting them to this format however I currently am having a few issues with the system. For one you can’t convert them to your Apps native Vray shader (or can you :o?)which is problematic because the whole idea of these materials is to give you a well refined and detailed base to build and learn upon.
Until I figure out the best approach to solve this, the materials will be in 3dsmax 2012 format.

OK, thanks for answering. I know you talked about vrmat format, but I wasn’t clear about it relating to this particular material set you’re putting together. Thanks for the clarification. I’d be glad to test the use of vrmat for you if you’d like. Even just a dumb sample or maybe something with a few layers. No rush on it, I’m waiting for the standalone to get to 3.0 and then I’ll pester you some more

Andy

pre purchasing a week before is fine for me.

keep on your great work!

I have taken 8 orders so far.
Remember, I am only taking 50 as I don’t believe I can maintain good customer service after this point.

Please email me at admin@sathe.com.au if you are interested and I will provide you with a promotional banner going over what to expect.

(I have created this on 2 hours sleep so please forgive grammar and formatting haha)

Removed sale information from banner due to possible forum regulations and blatant advertising. Sorry chaos group, I love you :frowning:

Car paints coming.

Money paid, and a sad weekend worker now with a smile on his face!!

Cant wait till the download drops.

Thanks Grant.

Mark

Ahahaha yeh that made me crack up this morning!

Red car paint. Very happy with this shader  You will get very good results with a solid HDR light studio setup.

A lot of research went into the flakes normal map which is 10k pixels wide and tileable also! It was generated with forest pack

more info regarding Damascus metal (industrial one), could be easier to mimic than the artisanal one:

Thanks

Humh car paints are very complex… they sort of have a anisotropy effect of metallic flakes in them but I cant notice it in your shader is it there?

I haven’t noticed any anistropic effects within car paint as of yet.
The flakes themselves do not have a granular bump and are inherently randomly rotated.

In this particular car paint the flakes are more subtle however there is a noticeable mottling effect that will react to lighting very well.

I will post a version with more obvious flakes to demonstrate the shaders ability.

Yeah I noticed that with a normal black car paint that up close its almost as if it’s a bumpy, panel beaten surface at a really small level underneath the clear coat - I presume you actually did a huge surface with a flake object scattered on it to make this bump / normal type of thing?

Also count me in - I’m mainly interested in your approach for the test scene and how you calibrate your lighting, it’s something I’ve gotta look at properly over the next while!

Yep, but I traced over high res references so the flakes shape and orientation was matched correctly.

Looking into it,

I guess I got pretty close with my attempt! Just need to invent a new procedural haha
