hardware hlep. Registered (?) Ram

Hello,

going to be picking up a new machine soon - a dual Athlon 3000+ or dual opterons and I’ve got the machine pretty much locked down otherwise. The guy at the shop asked me if I wanted registered ram or not and I was a bit stumped. Which versions should I go for…etc. I’m hoping to get 2 gigs of ram at the very least.

The Ram he suggested was very expensive. They were 2 sticks of Corsair 1GB 2X512 TWINX registered AMD64 Ram. Is generic stuff good?

i think you will find you dont have much chioce … most or all dual machines need ECC ram which is registered ram …

The difference between non-ECC and ECC RAM is simply an error checking logic IC which dual machines need i do believe.

Natty is rite, but also look up your mother board on the manufacturer’s site and it will tell you what types of ram the board supports. Not all dual boards require ECC ram but 90% of them do.
