Help with using the Corona Fabric shader to create a Curtain Material

As the title states, Please I need help using the Corona fabric shader to create a curtain material I’m actually confused about its setup. Normally when creating a curtain material in the corona physical material I use the opacity and translucency slots to create the effect I’m going for but while using the Corona Fabric shader the Translucency slot is linked to the Refraction slot which seems weird tbh. I would genuinely appreciate it if someone has a realistic workflow with using the Fabric shader. Thanks.

@Efetabore hi, the Fabric material may seem overwhelming at first, but you should be able to get any type of material you need after some playing around with it and understanding what each property does. My advice would be to zoom in a lot to see your material up close or to adjust its scaling. Then it should be easier to understand how various properties affect the shader.

If you have a reference picture of the material you would like to create, feel free to share it - this could start a fun experiment.

Also, have you seen our Help Center guide?

My issue is mainly regarding translucency being inactive until Refraction is activated. That’s the source of my confusion.

Curtains don’t need refraction just translucency.

We are getting into the “different ways to simulate the same real-world phenomena” discussion here, which can get confusing.

In case of the Corona Fabric Material, which simulates a very thin object, that does have some thickness though, you need to allow some light to pass through its surface first in order for that light to scatter inside the (very thin) volume.

If you look at any fabric through a strong magnifying glass, or even a microscope, the tiny strands that make it up are actually refractive. They reflect some light, refract some of it, and scatter it too. That’s what we try to simulate with Fabric Mtl’s controls.

To simplify your setup, you can try to:

  • Set base IOR to 1 - this will let you color the light passing through the material based on its “scattering color” only
  • Use similar colors for the weft/warp surface and as the “scattering color”

I am attaching a screenshot showing a sample setup like this.

I can also understand your point - the controls in the Corona Physical Material are different and this results in some inconsistency. You only need to enable “Thin shell” and translucency becomes active. In the Physical Mtl, translucency acts as refraction+scattering in Fabric Mtl.

But please also note that in order to enable volumetric scattering, you need to enable refraction or opacity, which is a similar approach to the Fabric Mtl’s controls.

Thanks Maru for your explanation, I’ll spend more time carrying out tests.
