HELP!!

I’m finally rendering frames for this animation. It’s not looking good for the deadline though. I precalced GI for every 10th frame. Using that precalced file, render time averages 11min per frame. (If I turn off motion blur it’s around 3.5 min/frame.) Of course I’d prefer to leave it on.

Same job as shown here: http://www.chaosgroup.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13998&highlight=

Any suggestions?

May have to consider Respower, but that would have to come out of my pocket, so I’d rather not!

I’ve never done it myself for a project, but you can render out to RPF’s and get the velocity channel and do the motion blur in post. Unless you’re working in combustion though I’m not sure how you use it (it’s quite easy in comb.-just dial in the amount of moblur you want).

Since you’re in a time crunch I thought I’d suggest this, maybe someone else can lend more info on actually how to go about it.

Good luck,
David

dont forget twixtor and just render every other frame or something.

If you have access to Combustion 4, you could add a timewarp to the animation. It will interpolate between however many frames you tell it to. That seems to be a pretty good way to fake it, and fast too.

Well, I don’t have combustion, and even if I did I’m not familiar enough with it to figure it out on this timeline.

Anyone have some spare farm time? And combustion?

Seriously - email me if you’re interested.

i used to like re-timer. was pretty smooth in its interpolations

those of you have tried frame interpolation - you’re saying you can hardly see any difference?
I figured it would look blurry

that could be like the most amazing time saving (ok 50%)

[I seem to notice that people like to stay rigidly on topic here, but it hardly seems worth starting a new thread]

I tried a couple of plugins for interpolating frames, and for fast moving animations nothing really works. re-timer, and another one…

For slow animation I guess they are worth it.

Try the demos.

actually one of the bettwe ways of saving frames if your ntsc is to actually render film rate of 24 and do a conversion or if your a traditional animator like i used to be you would know that people like WB animated at 12 frames a second. disney used to animate at the full 24 though in their features.

da-elf -you were a trad animator?
I have some friends who were - they dont seem to miss the good ole days!
anyway yeah I know about Warners doing stuff on “twos” and I believe Hanna Barbera or maybe the cheaper outfits in the 60’s and 70’s did things on “threes”

but of course I’m just doing plain old flythroughs - I’ll have to try the demos.
damn, now I’ve hijacked your thread CCS - sorry

CCS, can’t you lower the MB samples? What looks grainy on a still you will hardly notice in an animation.

Easiest way is to go and find extra PC’s though. How many do you have now? If you’re rendering on only 1 or 2, an extra PC will have a huge effect of course.

I would avoid the motion blur in vray. You could try reelsmart motion blur, available for premiere and after effects too. It´s easy, apply and render. If you overdo it, it looks weird, but if u let it to defaults, it will look ok. Not as good as the real thing, but u´ll be on the run again. You´ll save tons of rendertime.

The other solution, rendering out the velocity channel and, in combustion, apply the effect as a 3d post filter…well my experience is not very good with it, lots of artifacts…haven´t tried in recent versions, though.

Retimers are reaaaaally tricky. We sometimes up rerendering the scenes because of weird behaviour of the application. So, you must be pretty confident it will work, or otherwise, u´ll lose twice as time as u could have saved.

how many frames do you have to go?

Why not do the motion blur as a separate pass using the scanline renderer? I described a method to do this here:

http://www.chaosgroup.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13213

(see the end of my post)

I almost always do this for animations these days, it’s so fast!

any good?

I emailed you the link to down load the 600 frames I rendered for you on Thursday morning - did you ever use them as I didn’t get a reply? :?
