high settings - splotchy & dots??

I’m having some problems with trying to render final / higher res images. It seems to only happen when using higher render settings. Is there any rule of thumb dos and do nots for rendering with higher settings.

I am using Vray 1.50 SP1 (Max 9 - 32bit & 64 bit), Vray Sun & Sky with Vrayphysical Camera, AA doesn’t seem to affect outcome. I use Irr Map with Medium settings, 50,30 subs, detail enhancement on - default values. Light Cache for second bounce with default settings.

I have Vray plane and sphere lights with default subs and my camera is setup at f-16, 75 shutter and ISO 100.

Please advise - any comments or tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Regards Peter.

Dots are most likely fixed by checking sub-pixel mapping and clamp output…

For splotchiness, try turning up global subdivs multiplier to about 8

Consider IR high setting, then custom min: -6 max: 0

With these settings I rarely need my Hsph subdivs higher than 32.

Splochy marks are the irradiance map definately.

Try tightening up your map with something like 80/20? Also, what happens when you turn detail enhancement off? Maybe then try your global subdivs multiplier, as you can send your render times through the roof if you’re not careful.

The white spots I’m unsure about.

Thanks for the quick responses - I will test and let you guys know. Thanks again. I will keep you posted.

Splotches are IR map i think, i personaly never use detail enhanchement. hasn’t much pro’s if you ask me.
so you could try turning it off, and use preset high. this should render without splotches. or you have some weird other settings…

also check your materials for anything weird, cause those white dots are strange, maybe a bad material.
you could try a defautl material as override for all material in the vray-global parameters. this way you can test if you have a bad material

Another suggestion is turn “Store with Irradiance Map” on on the lights outside those windows, and then up their subdivisions to 32 or 64 (this shouldn’t increase rendertime with them stored with the imap. Downside? Less refined shadows from that light.

updated image - went to high preset - custom with -6,0 32, 20 subs & samples, detail enhancement off. Global subs - 8.0 (DMC Sampler)

Light cache second bounce - 1000 subs 0.02 sample, store direct light - checked

Image Sampler - (Antialiasing) - Adaptive DMC, VRayLanczosFilter - on size 2.0, adaptive DMC 1, 4 subs
The only lights outside the windows (Glass= Vray material) is the Vray sun.

Checked all materials, they all have Vray materials. Did I mention this file is linked from AutoCAD 2004??

Looks like most of the splotchyness is gone, except for the floor, which may be the dots??

Anyone see anything else I am missing?? Thanks for all the tips.

Regards Peter.

Did you remember to check Sub-pixel mapping and Clamp output in the Color mapping rollout?

Reflective GI caustics maybe ? (in the Irrmap Settings)

Regards,
Thorsten

Sorry Clifton - Yes I did - The clamp level is 1.0?? Thanks.

Thorsten - Thanks - it is currently unchecked??

hmm it’s supposed to be unchecked

Even with reflective caustics unchecked, you can still get some reflective caustics on secondary bounces.

Have you tried excluding all lights from specular?

So should I just uncheck affect specular on my lights??

Unchecked on all lights - except sun (obviously) and still dots - just different locations!

I’m wondering if someone would like to send me a preset that should be fine - then I can narrow it down to geometry or material?? What do you think??

Vray 1.50 sp1.

Cheers Peter.

Try turning off your sun, and see if thats it. There is recent thread about spots caused by sun…

I would say post your scene, but I wouldn’t be able to look at it until late tomorrow…

Sun off - still spots??

What about doing an ambient occlusion pass to check to geometry? (vray light material with a vray dirt map as the colour, dropped into the override slot)

If that’s ok, go back to your mid-grey override material try turning on each light in turn to see where the problem is? If none of that works then I’m stumped. maybe it’s something to do with the AutoCAD link?
