How do you model an LED light?

I wanted to try to model an LED to experiment with transparent materials and light. However, I’m struggling. Reference photos: http://www.coolest-gadgets.com/20071008/super-large-led-lamps/

Anyone got some hints? Or even better sample scene?

FYI, the LED in the original post is not a normal LED, I just used it as an example as it was the best closeup I could fine. File:Uv-LED.jpg - Wikimedia Commons
