how to create spilled water

I’ve tried a lot of different ways to create spilled water on a hard surface

But I cant create a curved area with chamfered egdes.

Is there anyone who knows where to find a tutorial for this???

Im not sure what you mean by "I cant create a curved area with chamfered egdes. " but I can say that you can achieve spilled water with realFlow simulation. If you need just a texture map you can use wetmaps to get that effect.

yes..RealFlow rocks…glue3d is fun.

But if you insist on doing it 'ol skool,
don’t use extruded splines…You should
take the time to build it from a plane (plan view), extrude it,
then you can chamfer the edges and msmooth.
It’s not actually that painful..and you’ll feel like a
terminator if you pull it off…!

for water cant you just extrude the shape, then convert to editable poly, then selecting the top face use bevel. 1st bevel should be small extrude, tiiiny bevel. then a larger bevel. then a larger bevel smaller extrude and do that about 3 or 4 times to give an ok curve

that wouldn’t really work, cause the second you used a meshsmooth, it would look whack. And I dont really think beveling 3-4 times is really a doable function.

Hmmm Morbid, seems your Realflow advise needs a lot of training in a new program. (which I just started doing)

And Da_elf, I tried it, it takes a long time to get it “nice” but it was the best look I got till now.

-if you do want to meshsmooth, don’t chamfer the edges.

you could probably use shell in his case.

1504 polys - 2 iterations
376 - 1 iteration

btw: i usually use Elf’s technique anyways :slight_smile:

doh! i don’t think i saved the file, but…when u have the plane
set up, just go into sub-object mode> select faces> extrude (mine)
-or- >bevel (like Elf’s)

the main point of my pic was this:
you can’t msmooth if u use a spline for your shape…the verts will
converge in the center and pucker.

yes, i did 2 tries
-1 like the example above (using extrude)
-2 shell modifier (to get a bottom surface)

i preferred the results above for some reason

*come to think of it, i’ve been using Elf’s technique hardcore for a
golf community that we’re working on…no other way to control poly
counts

hehe. both of ours look good. just gave your way a try too. looked nice. both cases work. one of the main things with the water however which mine didnt portray well though since i just did it quickly (and didnt save it) is that reflections play alot in defining it. BTW i painted a wetmap in PS with softedges then in max i traced inside the wetmap with the spline.

I get stuck at the very start

I create a plane (in standard primitives)
And thats where the fun ends

oh sorry..forgot to mention…you must collapse your primitive,
then you go to polygon selection in sub-object mode

Convert the plane to an editable poly (select, right click, convert to->) then you can select points, faces, edges and move them around

Once you have a shape you like, slap on the shell modifier like they said
