How to get nice sharp shadows?

I am currently working on a scene and am not getting sharp shadows. They look like a group of pixels, which is not what I want. How do I get nice sharp shadows without turning the light samples subdivs up to like 256 or something ridiculous to smooth out the pixelation?

If I make the light smaller how do I adjust for the loss of light? If I half the size of the light, for example, do I need to double the light mulitplier to keep the same amount of illumination?

Sorry for the daft questions but it has been a long night.

Cheers!

The smaller the light size is - the sharper the shadows will be and reverse.

About the light multilier:
reducing your light size 1/2 - you should raise the multiplier (x4) to get the same amount of light, as the light intensity is calculating with the formula: (W/m^2/sr)
