how to make realistic glass

hi there

i know, there were many threats about this, but i just don’t get it right.
how do i create a glass with the vraymat that is convincing ?

this is what i get so far

it can’t be that underneath/behind the glass all looks darker.
this just is’nt realistic.

here is the max-file with the table (Max 5.1, vray .15)

hi

you have 100% reflection … max depth you have it at 2 .. set it to say 10
set your OUR to 1.54 or something like that.. and diffuse set to black or dark grey.
And why are you using a material wrapper on it ??

The reason the frame of the table is so dark is because ‘Max Depth’ is set to 1 in the metal material. Like Natty says, set your ‘max depth’ to be at least 5.

Just try rendering the scene with the ‘max depth’ in the global switches, materials, set to 10.

yeah, you’re right natty; a wrapper for glass-mats isn’t really an option,
since the shadows will render opaque, whether you set ‘affect shaodws’ or not.

well, have another problem concerning glass.
check out the pic! as you see the boxes become darker in the
area where they stand inbetween or behind several glass-panels.
is there a work-around to solve this problem? they also should
be bright as the ones seen to the left or right from the panels.

Do you have affect shadows checked?

Do you have “refractive GI caustics” checked? If so, try upping your irradiance map settings or give a simple try with direct comp.

i don’t use any caustics in this scene. do i have to to get the correct
result?
‘affect shadow’ is activated.

refractive caustics is any GI passing through refractive surfaces - in other words, if you have a scene lit only by skylight, it would be dark under your glass table if you uncheck refractive GI caustics.

Just had a look at your file - and it’s just that little checkbox mentioned that does the trick. Life can be so easy :smile:

welcome to the tripple figure group hehe. as for the whole glass thing. well. i just use egz glass and never bother to look back again knowing that its going to be good

not even egz’s glass will save you if you uncheck refractive caustics in the render rollout. :smile:

true. but then again i never touch that hehe

all of my glass looks dark these days on exterior renderings…

*ticks refractive GI caustics*…hope this works!

ID use EGZ but cant install it on the network machines because they are all past the viz trial period …which is required so you can use the mzp file right?

mzp is a zip file, just change the extension to zip and unzip it, there is a file that tells max where to put what files (can’t remember the name of it, just open them in notepad). then you’ll know what files to put where on the farm boxes

here are some new renders with all the tipps from you concerning glass.
thanks again sushidelic and natty!

my only problem are the splotches on the orange fassade.
it has a strong bump map, maybe there’s somthing i need to
adjust in the render-settings. i use rather high values for ir-map and light-cache.
