Yes, it’s possible to model that in 3ds max with polygons, although there also are other ways to do it.

No, i mean CAD software like Fusion 360. Zbrush would be last app that come to my mind if i’d need to model something like this.
Rhino… and for the added detail/damages zbrush… then retopo do a UV mapping and normal mapping… easiest/fastest way… (Having Rhino or some similar CAD type software that is)
Doing straight out polygon modeling might give great results right off-the-bat, but unless you’re skilled modeller it’s a bit slow…
CAD software can give you some precise control and very smooth transitions for hardsurfaces even in places where subd fails without a lot of work.
Check this channel.He is a master about polymodeling and explains very well in short tutorials.
