Recently we have been working on a model for a large retail store. When rendering our master model the ram usage ROCKETS up to about 40GB of RAM
The file size is 450MB (I know that is quite big for a sketchup model but is quite normal for the files we normally work with.
When open without rendering the model takes about 4-6 GB of ram. as soon as you hit render it climbs up to 40GB (In fact on most of our computers it dies or starts to chug.) We have a prototype computer in we are testing to increase performance and this allowed us to see the scope of which it was trying to use.
I know its hard to see the problem without having the model itself but any ideas what could be causing this monstrosity?
There are hundreds of textures. 109 between 1-100kb, 191 between 100-200KB, 63 between 200-500KB, 18 between 500KB-> 1MB and finaly 10 between 1MB and 2MB though and the largest is 2mb. In total they total to about 108mb but i wouldn’t have thought it would expand to 40GB of RAM usage?
@matthewg Please note that RAM usage is project-specific and does not relate to the file size. Depending on the complexity of the project (geometry count, related textures, v-ray fur, etc), and the render settings, V-Ray will use varying amounts of RAM.
Scenes with a large number of objects and/or high triangle counts require more memory to render. Bitmaps tend to take up large amounts of RAM, especially if the maps at high resolution and filesize. Large output resolutions require a significant amount of RAM to store the final image, and additional Render Elements increase that amount.
If you could share the project with us, we can take a look in detail and provide possible optimizations and workflows to reduce the memory usage.
