a few questions on Hybrid rendering:

Is the Hybrid rendering in 3.6?
How are the GPU’s and CPU’s selected?
Are GPU’s used, even when using CPU bucket rendering?

How are the GPU’s and CPU’s selected?Either by using the ocldeviceselect tool, or by setting the environment variable VRAY_OPENCL_PLATFORMS_x64 to something like “c++/cpu;nvidia” without the quotes.

Are GPU’s used, even when using CPU bucket rendering?Currently you can only use hybrid rendering if you select the production render engine to be CUDA in the Render Settings dialog in Maya. On the V-Ray Standalone command line, you need to specify the -rtengine=5 option. In this mode we only do progressive rendering for the time being. We are investigating bucket-style rendering with GPUs for a future V-Ray version.

Do the non supported GPU features stay on the CPU, with the CPU calculating all features?

No. The CPU is just an extra CUDA device executing the same code as the GPUs (therefore, the result is always the same).

So would that mean that unsupported GPU features wont render using the Hybrid method?

Thats correct, yes. Hybrid rendering is feature for V-Ray GPU allowing it to utilize CPUs as well.

I like the bucket rendering progression. Would love to see GPU/ Hybrid support all the features of Advanced. I assume that is in the works :wink:

We add features both in V-Ray GPU and V-Ray all the time, however our goal is not to make them render 1:1 exactly the same. They have mostly the same features, with more to be added in the feature, but they are different engines (V-Ray have more features than V-Ray GPU, but V-Ray GPU also has some features that V-Ray doesn’t).

For me, it mostly about material maps like distance texture map. I guess I just need to find work arounds. Thanks for the response and I appreciate the efforts of everyone at Chaos Group.

What can the V-Ray standard render do that the Hybrid cannot? I looked and looked for this information, but I couldn’t find anything. I think is important to know before jumping on this new tool.
A first test I did to convince my peeps here to reconsider vray (vs octane) failed, as the test includes some heavy use of the Dispersion and that does not seem to be working at all in CUDA mode.

BTW I also found out that CPU-GPU does not support cryptomatte and the denoiser. I know there got to be some features lagging behind at this time, but my point is that you are not doing yourself any favor by not disclosing clearly what you can do and cannot do with this awesome new render.

I would imagine that the Hybrid system would have the same supported features as the gpu, although one of the developers would have to confirm:

Oh, VRScans isn’t on the GPU list, but on Chaos Group\s Instagram, someone is using a private build of VRay to render the scans.
Is this in the nightlies?

We have an internal beta build with those, yes.

Ooh, please let us know when that build is out. I’m using the VRScans on CPU at the mo, but have a few GPU’S I could be using.
